Urgently needed 8am tomorrow at the Near East University hospital. I have just got back from the hospital and they need at least another 3 units for a life saving operation.

Please please help if you can. Go to the blood back on lower floor. Blood for Ton Van Pruijssen.

Msg 1

I'm AB+ but can't remember if it's compatible. I'm happy to donate and if so, I'll need a lift from central Girne tomorrow morning. Email me from my profile details and check with Chris, nurseawful, for compatibility.

NN, sorry to disappoint but not Brit blood and mine is free!

@ msg 1, Sue: Have you contacted the BRS, they help whether you're a member or not.

Call this lady:

Prue Lundye

BRS blood donors

mobile: 05428551114

email: pruelundye@gmail.com

I have given her the content of the database of the Bloodbank, which Nurseawful started (I did the technical side). I seem to remember there were several people with the requested blood type in the database.

Msg 9

I think that's only for 'red' blood cells (see the above chart), for an emergency operation the surgeons will need 'whole blood'.

Point of interest. It is possible for a very fit male donor, normally between the ages of early 20's to mid 30's to donate two bags of blood in an extreme emergency. I did it myself in the early '80's and with others, saved a little girls life, but that's NZ for you; where the men are men and the sheep are nervous!

Morning Philnles, just tried to call but maybe your phone is off?

Directions to hospital:

Take the Lefkosa road over the mountains from Girne and turn left at the first roundabout on the outskirts of Lefkosa (the Famagusta road). Go under the bridge and turn immediate left just before Ataturk stadium. Follow the hospital signs through the university to the hospital which is at the end and has a very large car park outside it. At reception ask to be taken to the blood bank - it's down one floor. Please take your passport with you.

Thanks,

Sue

Please be aware that the NE University hospital will NOT accept any donors over 60. One of the BRS donors was turned away this morning. Sorry! The central blood bank will take donors over 60.

Can the University hospital not canvas the thousands of students they have there? They will all be of a suitable age!

For your information, it is not only the British Community who give blood! Recent experience shows that donations were from all sections of KKTC!!!

So now I understand why I did not get a telephone call. I am always happy to go and give when required, is there some medical reason why we are too old at 60?

I do not understand why my blood (brilliant haemoglobin) is welcomed by the blood bank but not wanted by this hospital. Would they let someone die rather than take the blood of an 'oldie'?

Can someone explain these anomalies to me? It upsets me to think that I cannot help when I want to. I think B+ must be a bit unusual so why are they being so fussy?

Sue, you didn't get a call because you gave at Lambousa, you can only give again after three months. That is a medical reason not to give, but thank you for your keen spirit to donate. We will always welcome you donating at the blood donor days at any age as long as you are feeling ft and healthy, but only if you have had a three month break.

Message 40,

I was not going to get involved in this BUT this morning I sent out 9 text messages (which I paid for) I had X amount of reply's, the reply's I received i asked had they been contacted first by the BRS. Guess what not one!

Hans Doeleman and I worked really hard to put together a database of donors which we then handed to the BRS this cost Hans money, and guess what NONE were contacted re this blood.

Also when did ANY age apply?

We will always welcome you donating at the blood donor days at any age as long as you are feeling ft and healthy, but only if you have had a three month break.

Chris.

If I read your post correctly; what a shabby, inept, self-serving organisation the BRS has shown itself to be.

I am so sorry Conni that you were turned away...I had no idea of the rules. Pop into the Hut next time you are passing and we will buy you a drink!

On a happy note.... Ton has responded well to surgery and is out of danger.

Understood, Cazleo, thanks for explaining this to me. I did not realise that it had to be 3 months between donations of blood. I will always attend Lambousa whenever I can.

You all do a great job with the emergency calls and your donor days. Thankyou for that also.

If you think you might want to become a donor, stop thinking about it and just do it. Your blood is a most precious gift and is so appreciated.
