I guess its not a huge surprise but it looks like the Lib Dem are getting a pasting in both council elections and the Scottish assembly elections. Add to that the pollsters prediction of a no to AV its looking like a pretty bad night for the lib dems.

Could I just correct you, it is the Scottish Parlimentary Elections, N Ireland and Wales have an Assembly but we have a full parliment. Most the of the Lib Dem constituancies in Scotland are in rural areas and among the last to declare but it does look as if both the Lib Dems and Labour will take a pasting from the sitting SNP government.

Am I the only one finding this election fascinating ?

SNP majority in scottish parliament. Has to mean a refferendum on Scottish independance does it not and within the life of this parliament ?

I know most 'experts' say that there is not a majority for independance, but then most experts said there was no chance the SNP would get a majority in this election. The possible begining of the end for the UK ?

From what I understand the SNP have been giving away lots of sweeties. Frozen council tax for 4 years, free university education and other totally unrealistic benefits. It seems like bribery with no concern for the financial future. No doubt England will be contributing towards this.

If the jocks want to beak away from England, then I have no problem with that whatsoever.

ps I would like to add that I enjoy the company of Scots. I often find them more playful and fun to be with than my fellow Brits.

There are just so many things I dont know answer too about poitential yes vote on a scottish independance referendum.

Can the UK parliament refuse to grant such indpendance if the scottish people ask for it via such a referendum ?

What consititutes a scot in terms of eligability to vote ? Purely anyone resident in scotland at the time of the vote ? What about scots that live overseas at the time of the vote, will they be denied a say in the question ?

Would EU membership automatically applied to an indepednat Scotland or would it have to apply itself as a sovreign nation ?

Who would 'own' assets like the nuclear power plants in scotland built with taxpayers money from accross the entire UK ? If the scots wanted nothing to do with these nuclear plants would the remnant UK be liable for the cost of decomissioning them and dealing with waste ?

Just so many question I have no idea about the answers too. I find it fascinating to be honest.

From what I can make out the majority of Scots do not want Independence, hence they would vote differently in a general election. At the moment they are happy with Salmond, possibly for the reasons I mentioned earlier.

If you look around the world though , regions are breaking down in to smaller areas. The only exception is the European Union. It leven looks like Bosnia is going to split in to two areas, as the serbian bosnians now want their own country.

Whats going on?

Well, in the last century and the one before countries bound together for security. Hence we had empires. Now that we are moving towards more security and openness we are seeing countries demanding independence and binding by ethnicity. This makes perfect sense as researchers believe that the brain is designed to function most effectively in a group of 150. Small is beautiful.

This is one of the reasons why Cyprus may eventually have partition. Or this is the force working against reunificati

People always seem point to how much cash shorfall scotland would have if independant. But what 'dividend' would there be to not havingt trident, not be in Iraq, Afganistan and Libiya ? How different would EU payments vs reciepts be for a scotland seperated from the UK?

Again I do not know the answers to such questions but I have a suspicion that the idea that scotland could not provide a similar level of public service as it does with current subsidies from England.

I am also aware that all the experts say that if there was a referendum today scottish people would reject independance. THen angain they also said it was next to impossible that any party could win a majority in the scottish parliament with the complex PR system used, yet it happened anyway. And the referendum will not be 'today'. No doubt it will be near the end of the current parliament after a series of increased devolved powers that lead step by step to indpendance.
