What is it with these Flies that bite here, (Not talking about mossies) we are quite a long way from the beach, but we are pestered to death with these blooming flies. In the garden and on the balconies. I have been told they are Sand Flies, so why are they not on the beach on the sand.

These flies are about the size of a normal house flies, but they have white markings on them. Are they sand flies. If not what the hell are they?

If they are sand flies and you are bitten, dab ımmediatley with vinegar(any type) the pain and swelling will dissapear(sp).

No these are not sand flies but they are very persistent biting flies. You can barely see the sand flies.

Sand flies are very very small and almost transparent but you know when they bite you. The bigger biting flies are a pain they seem to be getting more common lately.

Try spraying yourself with lemon cologne - most of the annoying, biting, flying insects cannot stand the smell!!!

spray a piece of kitchen towel wit fly killer and roll it into a glass and put it on the table. I think you'll find this makes them go away.

Hi Lilli,

"I use vinegar to clean my pots, dishes and worktops but never knew about the medicinal side"

Here are other uses for vinegar...

Years ago ( in the days when every thing was in black and white ) here in Cyprus, you would go into shops and they, the staff , would squirt some lemon liquid into your hands and I was told that it was clean your hands and also to keep flies away.

They dont seem to do it a lot now.

Msg 1 They are not sand flies, sand flies are Very Small and the bite is similar to a Mozzie bite, but causes less of a reaction..... However Sand Flies can spread Lieshmaniasis ,and Sand Fly fever...Use a good Brand repellent and be Careful...............

PS.They are called Sand Flies because of their Colour...... nothing to do with Sand....

ill tell you exactly what is pestering you it is the stable fly

of which the female variety likes nothing more than landing on your legs ankles usually morning or early evening and will happily gorge blood till you swipe it with a machete hope this helps

If you can get someone in the UK to go to a Tack shop(horse things) ask them to bring a spray for horses.Sludge(above) is correct and the best way to deal with them is to use the horse spray.I used it years ago when we had horses that were out in the field for the summer.stops the poor things being pestered & bitten.I use the spray here on the paved areas where we sit.It contains natural products and no citronella-and you will not be choking on smoke from those smoldering rings.

Hi,

Amongst the Sun Tan lotions and aftersuns I'm selling at Açmenya Restaurant in Alsancak on Thursday afternoons and Chateau Lambousa on Saturday mornings I have two new Insect Repellents on sale.

I was plagued to death out in the garden with these flies, especially around the chickens. I got terrible reactions to the bites too. Now I use the roll on type that I'm selling and it seems to be keeping them away from me.
