A certain member keeps posting with special characters in the title of the post which is against forum rules for technical reasons. First a warning by e.mail, then a short ban, then a longer ban and now a ban for one month. I always give my reason when I ban somebody. Is it possible that this person does not read the reason given? How else can anyone explain this behaviour?

To be fair, some people on this board have learning difficulties and health problems which affect their interpretation. Others have literacy and other educational issues.

Why not try for contact phone numbers, writing in capital letters or try and communicate through a third party?

The posts in question always had ******** before the title to draw attention. I can understand a Question mark or an "@" where appropriate but not when used at the beginning or end of a sentence with several repeats. Its a matter of common sense really.

Considering the board's insistence on a minimum title length, it is unreasonable that the moderators should then complain if a poster chooses to fill out the title with * & - or anything else.

From Time to time the posting of special characters in titles, particularly at the beginning, upsets the formatting of the board front page I believe. Whilst the reason may seem petty, the problems it causes are real.

How can using any character on a standard keyboard make any difference at all. The characters mentioned so far are exactly that - standard - not at all special.

breezyboy because it is common practice to use certain charaters to signify to the computer program that drives the forum that the charater is not to be displayed but to be interpreted as a formatting command.

I do not know what the specific charaters and command are on this forum, because it is bespoke. However on forums that use popular forum software to drive them like phpBB to name one of several commonly used programs a stdnard set of chrts are used for formatting purposes. phpBB forums use BBcode for formatting. In BBcode when ever the forum software see an [ charter, it interps that as signifying that a specific formatting code is comming up and that the chrt is not to be displayed.



So for example in BBcode if you type in a post (or subject header) [bold]Hello[/bold] what gets displayed by the forum software is just 'Hello' but it is in bold text. The chrts [] and / are all 'special' chrts.

this forum does not use BBcode, and I do not know what codes it uses but the principle is the same.
