One monument less to worry about in TRNC - Greek Orthodox St Thekla (aka St Thecla) church in Bafra ruined after "accident"...

More here: ▶ [ http://is.gd/ncsjld/st_thekla_church_bafra ].

Note: Thecla was a saint of the early Christian Church, and a reported follower of Paul of Tarsus. She is not mentioned in the New Testament, but the earliest record of her comes from the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla, probably composed in the 2nd century. (Source: [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thecla ] ).

Judging by the pictures the JCB accidentally bumped into it, the church collapsed completely and all the debris landed in a neat little pile. You couldn't make it up - then again the government does every day of the week :-(

Shame the JCB didn't "collide" with the Noahs Ark instead! What has happened to this country, I remember as you all do what Bafra was like before it was ruined.

One of the saddest things about this 'accident' is the ammunition it gives the South against the North.

for them it cries out for retaliation and vengeance, - so what chance of an answer!

Re : Msg 1,

Oh dear!

I drove past this little church several times on my trips to Karpaz, have somewhere its photo. Always wanted to look up its name, never did.

Now I know its name, though only post mortem.

How sad!

Dear Clarissa, sad it is not a word I would use for this act. Barbaric I think. How on this gods earth, whatever your faith can you destroy a place of worship. Years ago they were a place of santuary. How can peace ever become this island x

Under the title "Disrespect to history", daily Kibris publishes a picture of the chapel before its demolition and a picture of the place after the demolition. The paper reports that the chapel was not a monument, but its demolition is a crime. Hasan Tekel, responsible of the "antiquities and museums' department" in occupied Famagusta area, told the paper that the eastern part of the chapel was the most sacred and special from architectural point of view. He said the church had not been seriously damaged after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and that no danger existed that it would collapse.

Referring to the issue, Resat Akar, director of Kibris Media Group, writes, inter alia, the following in his daily column in Kibris under the title "Respect to history and the humankind": "We see what is happening in a country where no control exists. They destroyed Saint Thekla chapel, which had a 200-year long history, because they will create the Noah's Ark

[Tr. Note: A hotel that will be built in occupied Vokolida area]. When you have power, you can do everything in this country now? All patriots can celebrate now. We destroyed another historical monument of the Greek Cypriots. Could it be a biggest joy than this?

While we are referring to historical monuments, I want to pass to the issue of Thermia village. The muhtar [Tr. Note: headman] of the village conveyed to Evkaf [Religious Foundation] the request of the people of the village to have a mosque. The Foundation indicated a land as a response to this request. Go and build a mosque next to the church! If a day comes when the bell of the church starts to ring again, put four microphones to overbear it! For goodness sake, could such things happen? We left many mosques in the south. No one saw or heard that a church has been built next to any of them. Then, why we consider the others' culture as having no importance?..."

Furthermore, daily Yeni Duzen (06.05.11) also publishes a picture of the Saint Thekla chapel before its demolition and another picture of the place after the demolition. The paper reports that archaeologist Tuncer Bagiskan, former "deputy director of the antiquities department", has said that the demolition of the chapel "is closely related to the issue of Turkifying and Islamizing Cyprus".

Finally, daily Havadis (06.05.11) reports that the demolition of Saint Thekla chapel has become an international problem and that the Greek Cypriots will carry the issue to Brussels. The paper publishes statements by Gurel Inan, coordinator of the Noah's Ark Hotel, who said that they are ready to make up for the damage. He noted that they are considering of building a similar chapel.

Good to see the Turkish Cypriot press condemning this, especially the "Turkifying and Islamising Cyprus".

Marion msg 8: "One of the saddest things about this 'accident' is the ammunition it gives the South against the North.

That is nonsense. The "saddest thing" here is a religious building has been destroyed and you as a "journalist" should be condemning it out of hand, just as ordinary Turkish Cypriots and the TC Antiquities department have.

>>Resat Akar, director of Kibris Media Group, writes the following in his daily column in Kibris under the title "Respect to history and the humankind": "We see what is happening in a country where no control exists. Haram olsun, Marion.

All these comments but no one has asked about the poor driver of the JCB, was he injured or not. Surely some thought should be given to the driver as this was an accident after all.

A person should be considered innocent until proven guilty and as such afforded the benefit of doubt for his actions.

DC please explain if you can why so much time and money (EU?) was spent renovating the Greek Church near Tatlisu and yet this one at Bafra was dozed. Maybe it was just in the wrong place? Spoilt the view from Noah's Ark?

Cannot comprehend this and I am an atheist!

@ msg 23, delikomsu: As far as I know the EU does not pay (directly) for any restoration/renovation of any building in TRNC. However the EU does participate in the so-called "United Nations Development Programme 'Partnership for the Future'" (Programme funded by the European Union). An example here:

http://is.gd/rJcXn6/eu_funded ] and here: ▶ [ http://is.gd/uS5cgJ/Bedestan_EU ].

There is also some "brotherly cooperation" between the RoC and the TRNC (with the usual problems) regarding the renovation of a Greek Orthodox monument in TRNC... (From my web site: "... the Apostolos Andreas monastery in the "Panhandle" (Karpaz peninsula) is a historic interesting building and deserves conservation for generations to come. There were plans... There was money... And there was... This ongoing soap needs some attention..!"). Type : Apostolos : in the search window of my site http://www.allcrusades.com if you'd like to know more - to complicated to explain in a few words...

msg 24 continued.

Delikomsu said in msg 23: (...) please explain if you can why so much time and money (EU?) was spent renovating the Greek Church near Tatlisu (...)

▶ Just for the record: there are no Greek churches in TRNC - there are many Greek Orthodox churches, chapels, monasteries etc from before 1974 in this country. I'm not aware of the background of the renovation of the GO church you are mentioning. It's not difficult to find out if you are interested.

Paid for accident Lilli, by whom and for what purpose?

I doubt that the poor driver of the JCB will be getting paid whilst being off work! Lets hope that he is not suffering from shock!

It must have been a dreadful experience for him to be arrested and taken to jail.

Re : Msg 24,

Re:Apostolos Andreas monastery.

A classic Greek tragedy with elements of a soap opera: USAID offers 5 mln on restoration, the other side insists on engaging a Turkish-based company, when refused ( USAID rules require that all proposals should go through a tender), can not be bothered to submit their proposal in time.

Money withdrawn, the monastery - crumbling.

Great!
