Hi all

In March this year i flew from Birmingham to Larnaca with Monarch.

All went well at the check in, no problems with cabin luggage which they weighed.

At the gate to the aircraft a member of the airport staff informed us that passengers are allowed 1 item of hand luggage, and that was that. You can imagine passengers trying to put all their airport purchases in their cabin luggage.

I have since contacted Monarch and asked the question regarding cabin luggage and duty free or other purchases made within the airport, the following is their reply.

*****************

Thank you for your email.

One item of hand luggage is permitted only. Items bought in duty free must fit into the hand luggage.

If passengers are being permitted to take their hand luggage, as well as items bought in duty free separately, this is down to the discretion of cabin crew.

Kind regards

Emily

I wonder if the retailers within the airport are aware of this policy of this company.

I know for a fact that they pay considerable sums to operate their franchises in this local.

I have spoken to one individual, an IT specialist who works in a airport outlet and he had no knowlege of this policy.

In December I used Monarch to Larnaca, I had a small case weighing 10kg with my laptop in it, went through with no problem, I also had a handbag, going back through Larnaca I had to take the laptop out of the case and put it through seperate and my husband had to take his cameras out of his hand luggage, I had a handbag and a small bag with sandwiches and a bottle of water I was let through with them.

I went home for easter, and was laden with duty free paperbacks and sweets and chocolate for local kids on my return journey. I had several bags plus my 10kg hand luggage and nothing was said at all. Monarch.
