There will be free Maths and Physics (IGCSE) revision assistance at the education centre in Girne, for students currently studying for their exams. I intend to hold at least three sessions to assist and help out individually the ongoing revision work by the selected students.

The only classroom at my disposal for this purpose, can take a maximum of 6 students (possibly 7 with an extra table), therefore it is important anyone interested emails me immediately at turkishlessons1to1@yahoo.com

Priority will be given to those currently attending one of the schools around Girne.

There are no strings attached! This is to assist more serious students, who are finding it difficult to get on with their work in their current educational environment, and to give them a first hand experience to a better and cheaper alternative, planned for next year at the education centre where these lessons will be taking place.

In our days we had GCE O & A Levels. The minimum requirement for university entrance in those days was 2 A Levels in relevant subjects but most universities asked for 3. In the summer of 1961 I took five A Levels and passed all of them. Physics, Chemistry, Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Turkish. Five was the maximum one could take in one term. That must explain why I know so much

Let us get back to the subject.

BigOz, is there any special reason for offering this service free of charge?

Why were you not encouraged to take 'S' levels? But not one term, two years more like it!

BigOz

You must be of the 'old school' offering your lecturing expertise time for free. Well done!

The main reason is to help some of the students I feel I let down by deciding to give up my teaching post at a certain educational establishment, reputed for very high turnover of teachers.

I am trying to make the point "shame on those who have financial greed, bigger than their conscience!". If things work out as I plan this year, I am seriously considering setting up a high school by September, where the GCSE 'O' and A level courses will be on offer to both foreign and TC students at cost price - with quality teachers and teaching.

At this time, all I hear are parents complaining about paying too much and getting too little in return. I am on a crusade to push these establishments get off their high horse, and stop playing with young people's educational future.

I'd like to help but a degree in 'Drama & Speech Therapy', not having taken my BEd would be of little interest for your worthy project. However, email me if you'd like assistance.

Thanks a lot Richard! I do not think most of the teachers in private schools and education centres in North Cyprus have the necessary academic qualifications to teach many of the subjects they do! I shall keep you informed of the developments.

On the other hand, I've had only 2 positive responses so far! So it seems people are a bit weary when things are for free. I bet I would have had three times as many people interested if I were to charge 30 TL per session

Well it sounds like a very interesting project, and I wish you all the best.

Im not sure how many of the teachers are unqualified as there are supposedly very strict govt regulations on teachers working both in both public and private establishments, but those who are teaching privately may not have qualifications.

Perhaps you could put an ad in the kibris paper. Ive seensome dershanes and etud centers do this especially for the summer, and they hope to take some of the free students as fee paying enrollments for the next academic year.

keep us posted.

Groucho;

I cannot do chemistry A level privately. To do justice to the student, it really is a subject that should go hand in hand with practical work. You can get away with Physics and Biology, using graphics and animations, but Chemistry does require a lot of practical work. However, if you are inquiring about this Saturday, unfortunately it will only be Maths and Physics.

If the education centre takes off as planned - yes! we shall be doing all science subjects, and hopefully with all the practical aids that go with them.

Pixie; On the contrary, I know many teaching in private sector (although qualified in "something") are not qualified to teach the subjects they are expected to. I shall go further than that, and tell you that many are phoneys, who have not got a clue about the subject they are teaching. I have hard evidence to that effect and have already booked a meeting at the Ministry of Education in Lefkoşa to produce the evidence and discuss the issue further. (continu

Do not worry about the "dershane"s. Thanks to the incompetence and inability of current educational establishments (and they include some of the Unis), they are all playing full-house!

As for strict government regulations Those of us who lived here long enough do know what they are about. They are as strict and sound as a packet of biscuits about to be stepped on by an elephant. Having said that, I must admit that what you say is very true for state schools - Yes! they are well qualified teachers, but overpaid and under-worked as they are - they too are failing to deliver! The day teachers stopped marking homework, is the day I lost all faith in them.

By the way, I would be interested in donating time for IGCSE English and IELTS english. I live and work in Nicosia so no chance of me working down Kyrenia way, but I would love to help out for a couple of last minute exam sessions if you have any students who need help.

Like I said- no ulterior motives- just happy to be giving to the community..

Thank you very much for your kind offer Pixie - I shall ask those coming in for revision work on Saturday, but I doubt much can be done in time because the exams start 10 days time or so. But I wish there were more dedicated teachers like your kind self. It used to be, teachers taking great pride in what they taught and for being what they are. Times have changed as the society got more affluent.

I shall definitely keep you in mind (and posted), when I get inquiries for English, from Lefkoşa. If we do start a private IGCSE school by next September, we might even try to convince you to move to Girne
