Hi cyprusjoker.

If you can arrange for someone to take any that you have to the Bank of England, they will exchange for what is deemed to be the then current "legal tender" on a pound for pound basis.

This is also what would happen if, for example, you found a stash of the old "white fivers" or any other Sterling currency (i.e. notes and coinage) that was made "not legal tender".

Msg 4

I can't understand why you didn't go back to them and remonstrate, it's not everyday they change £5K so you must be remembered.

We got some of these amongst a withdrawal from the TEB ATM a few months ago. We didn't discover it until we went to pay school fees and they wouldn't accept them. Luckily, we had a receipt for the withdrawal and went back to the bank later the same day. After a short 'discussion' where they stated they were legal in Cyprus, they agreed to swap them for the latest notes. We haven't used their ATM for Sterling since.

Msg. 3 I think if you found a stash of of the old white fivers, you should do something rather more than exchange for modern fivers. Ebay would probably be the place for them, or a decent auction house back in the UK!! If in reasonable condition.

I was given lot of NF post 2WW French Franc bank notes to cash in at the French Central Bank and the teller had a fit, refusing to cash them in at face value as they were worth considerably more on the open market. I gave the seller face value which she was happy with even after I explained they were worth more and I still have them! Well, she was my God-Mother!
