I have just recieved this from a very good friend

Simbas

TWO SUBJECT LINES of which to be AWARE.

Just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL. ALSO WENT TO TRUTH OR FICTION, IT'S on their site also.

PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE you know!

1.) Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it!

If you get an e-mail along the lines of 'Osama Bin Laden Captured' or 'Osama Hanged', don't open the Attachment!!!!

This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel.

Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know.

2.) You should be alert during the next few days:

Do not open any message with an attached file called 'Invitation' regardless of who sent it.

It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer!!!!

continued

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this E-mail to all your contacts.

If you receive an e-mail called 'invitation', even though sent by a friend. Do not open it!!!

This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.

This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus..

This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where other vital information is kept.

Hi,

This has been about for a while now.

Unfortunately, unlike the Trojan it warns about,

the email hoax is getting wide distribution,

spreading FUD and wasting time and bandwidth.

Please do be considerate;

DON'T send this warning to anyone you know.

It's as bogus as the alleged pictures of Osama are.

See link....

Simbas

Can't you amend the title to reflect the fact that it's a hoax? Otherwise people who only read the first couple of posts might do exactly what we now know they should not.

Here's a rule of thumb... if any email or thread says pass message about a virus on to all your friends or contacts then it is almost always a hoax... The dupe falls into the trap of thinking they don't have time to check and they are trying to be as helpful as the email/thread suggests they should be. Also ones that claim that this has been verified are usually just the opposite... so let the alarm bells ring and do the check yourself.

One easy way to do this is to paste a sentence from the email into your internet search engine and see how it turns out. More often than not the top item will be one dispelling the myth.

http://www.snopes.com/ is a good place to check.

Please can people check with Snopes and other similiar web sites before posting about "warnings". It's the warnings themselves that can be potentially dangerous. I innocently downloaded one of the most vicious Trojan Horses ever last year, purely because I didn't know about Snopes then. Even check with Snopes before you accept a Microsoft Windows warning, because these can be even more realistic as well. In the past the BBC and CNN have been fooled into broadcasting fake warnings, so we can be excused from time to time though!!

Just to be clear there is nothing dangerous in the email that Simbas reporoduced here, nor would passing it on present any danger to anyone it was passed ontot. It just a waste of everyones time, nothing more.

As for "Always best to check yourself before scaring people." True unless scaring people is the intent. There is nothing scary in the lie that ECHR does not protect foreigners in the TRNC I guess.

@ msg 14, Tango1: (...) I innocently downloaded one of the most vicious Trojan Horses ever last year, purely because I didn't know... (...)

▶ You really don't have to check web sites yourself - GOOD anti-virus software on your hard drive (with a daily or even hourly updated database of malware) will check ALL incoming data traffic (including the content of mail messages) for hidden threats. You'll be warned with text on your screen, an alert sound and the question if you'd like to delete the suspicious file or quarantain it for later inspection.

▶ There is also software available to check your own OUTGOING data traffic, so one will never pass on malware to friends ever again...
