I'm sure there are people who would give you a sensible reply, maybe they're like me and don't know what a Garmin is. Can you enlighten us please.

From the garmin website of offical garmin dealers in Cyprus

C A PETRIDES LTD

P.O. BOX 56086

LIMASSOL 3304

Phone: 00 357 25 564 200

Fax: 00 357 55 651 23

Depending on what you want the device for, you may just be better off buying a mobile smartphone as these all have the same GPS tech in them as the hand held garmin devices. There are many apps available that provided the same or similar functionality to a dedeciated GPS device. You can buy such phones in the UK from around £90, which is cheaper than the dedicated Garmin devices.

Garmin, Tom Tom, Sat Nav etc. are all brand names with navigation capability i.e. they all have GPS (Global Positioning System), they follow the signals from these satellites and depending on time differences from each satellite they calculate the distance and hence by trigonometric computations determine the current coordinates of your position. If you have a map installed it will show your position on the map. With advanced navigation systems and software it will also tell you how to get to the address you wish to go. It will show you the route and also tell you to turn right, turn left etc. at the right time. If you miss a turn, unlike the wife, it will keep calm and redirect you accordingly.

The one I have also has most of the speed cameras marked on the map and warns me 500 metrtes in advance. As you all know I am a careful driver but the navigator is an extra bonus.

Elko they are not just used for navigation, though that is a main use of them. I used such devices with both Birdlife Cyprus and Kuskor to map out km squares and then find and survey these squares 'down on the ground', as well as to record specific locations where say limesticks were found. Today however I would not need or use such a dedicated device, my (partners) mobile phone would do the job just as well. The latest generation of mobile smartphones are seriously eating into the traditional markets for companies like Garmin and Tom Tom, who are responding by making 'apps' for these phones now as well as selling bespoke dedicated devices. Garmin actualy released its own phone in conjuction with I think Asus, but it was a bit of a flop.

msg 13 Tango,

In the Turkish version its a lady giving directions and as expected occasionally mixes up her right and left but the map is accurate

If I switch over to English, I have the choice of a lady or man giving instructions.

Erol,

actually the mobile phones with GPS capability have the upper hand because most of them lock onto the location within seconds because they use the information obtained from the GSM base stations. They can also download the map of the location using GPRS but that may cost you money. Anyway, the future lies with all singing and all dancing mobile phones.
