It is very upsetting to see young drivers being killed or involved in an accident due to speed, costing lives of innocent people. Everytime a fatal accident occurs, the very next day police are on the road as usual stopping cars randomly...booking drivers generally for missing documents etc.. The government should really consider the insurance policy as it is in the UK. If youre under 25 youre policy is very high, if it is a high performance car you may not get insured at all, and if you get caught without insurance you should be imprisoned. When will the government here wake up before more lives are gone?

One way could be to make it illegal driving with mainland driving licenses only. In fact ban all mainland Turks from driving minibuses or taxis!

Giving way to pedestrians at our so called zebra crossings..or even stopping at a roundabout to give way to the right would be a good start for some!

"In fact ban all mainland Turks from driving minibuses or taxis"

Your chips are showing...

The children of parents unwilling to rein-in there offspring driving suped-up pocket rockets and other high speed vehicles appear to be the largest factor but don't let stop your racial stereo-type from rearing its ugly head.

The driving here is appalling. The 'inshallah' attitude to road safety is the biggest problem. The TRNC government carry much of the blame for the poor state of cars. The MOT test is a joke and a dangerous one at that. No left-hand drive vehicles should be allowed as PSV's and those that exist should be limited to 65kph by being fitted with speed limiters.

show some of the uk driving ads about wearing seat belts on local tv it might make the parents stop letting their kids stand up in the cars.locals love their family so why do they let them stand and not be properly seated.

Stop the locals using the phones when driving will be a start, unfortunately some of the locals and especially the Turkish drive like no one else is on the road, they are selfish and have no consideration for anyone else, it shows when they have small children sitting on their laps while driving or standing up in the front, they profess to love their children but this beggars belief. But the police will do nothing as they drive just as badly I am afraid.

It is a real tragedy. Driving fast is a real bug bear for me.

Young males driving fast is a big problem in the UK as well as the TRNC. Undisciplined young males lack impulse control, they live for the moment (cant anticipate the future) and they often feel that they are invincible.

You have to be tough with them to get the message. Forget about insurance, putting up the prices wont work as they will drive without it.

If they drive fast you have to impound the car for a year. After the year they can get the car back. If the car belongs to someone else, then the driver will need to explain why the car is impounded. This will help their system to learn guilt and ultimately discipline. They understand shame, but only from their peers.

Different solution is needed if the car is stolen.

ps

I forgot to mention that you need to increase the number of traffic officers.

A friend of mine used neural nets to establish the best way to beat all forms of crime. His analysis showed that you need to increase the number of traffic officers. The county force that employed his advice saw a sharp decrease in all types of crime.

Sadly this knowledge has been lost in the system and the UK government has recently announced that it is significantly decreasing the number of traffic officers. This would seem like a huge mistake.

Stop building these motorways - speed kills - I suspect if you gave 100 people on the roads a proper driving test about 5 would pass. They do not understand about lane discipline or tail gating - I have known people who have driven all their life in UK but will not hire a car here whilst on holiday. The police also do not know what dangerous driving is or driving without due care and attention all they do is blow a whistle and write tickets. There must be lots of UK retired police here to be able to give a few lessons - when I see the pictures of these teenagers who have died it is heartbreaking - all thinking 'it will never happen to me'. I only ever drove on the new road into Kyrenia from Alsancak once and it was horrendous.

Please can I say that speed does not kill - it is what you hit that kills. Driving standards need improving but speeding fines are a good earner and unfortunately driver training costs money

Hi Rocking I wont even drive here now. They scare the life out of me. You are right though a proper driving test. I saw the father of a young girl around 14 years old (they lived in the flat upstairs) let her drive his car every night. No L plates nothing. What is the legal age here to have a licence.

To coin a phrase: Education, Education, Education. But surely it must start at the top?

When I see the driving instructors driving by alone and using their mobile phones and smoking, I do wonder at the logic of it.

But I really do despair at the parents who have their young children standing in front of them whilst on their motor scooters.

As for the boys in blue with their baseball caps on riding by on motorbikes and trying to enforce helmet laws..........

Any cars that are not road worthy should be scrapped. The MOT should be more stricter.
