The 19th of May celebrations began today with a speech on Bayrak Radio Television by the Minister of National Education, Youth and Sports Kemal Dürüst.

Minister Dürüst underlined the fact that the Cyprus Turkish People gained independence with the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, after waging a years-long struggle for existence.

“It is our duty to perpetuate the Republic” he said, adding that dignifying the TRNC is the most important responsibility of the Cyprus Turkish youth.

The Minister went on saying that the Cyprus Turkish youth shall walk in the path drawn by Atatürk while perpetuating the state.

Pointing to the need not to forget the past while working for the achievement of peace, Dürüst said that a political agreement in Cyprus should have a strong foundation which doesn’t ignore the past experiences.

He stressed that the people of the TRNC should not renounce the national interests in the event of a solution.

It doesn't make sense

He wants the youth to value and cherish the hard fought independence of the TRNC, yet at the same time he is saying value the TRNC in the event of a solution.

Is he conditioning people to prepare for a solution, but cant quite bring himself to believe in the dissolution of the TRNC?

Bit of a double edged sword. Say one thing and mean the other. I think the youth here should forget the past and move onto a better future.Every country has history but most move on from it to develope the future.

What an un-decent speech from a man named Decent. I think he is planning for the next 10 thousand years when the Greater Turkish/Ottoman Empire is re-established.
