19th of May, Ataturk Remembrance, Youth and Sports Day is being celebrated today with ceremonies throughout the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus alongside with Turkey.

The first ceremony of the day was held in front of the Ataturk Monument in Lefkosa.

President Deviş Eroğlu, the Speaker of the Parliament Hasan Bozer, Prime Minister İrsen Küçük, Founding President Rauf Denktaş, Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa Halil İbrahim Akça, the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces-Lieutenant General Adem Huduti and Security Forces Commander- Major General Mehmet Daysal and Second President Mehmet Ali Talat were among the high level officials attending the wreath-laying ceremony.

The day’s events reached to a climax with the main ceremony at the Ataturk Stadium in Lefkosa where a cortege of youths from secondary schools and performances of various dance shows took place.



Similar ceremonies were also held in other major cities across the Republic.



President Derviş Eroğlu and First Lady Meral Eroğlu will also be giving a reception at the Presidential Palace this evening.

The day marks the 92nd anniversary of the start of the Turkish War of Liberation launched by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who landed in Samsun, the Black





Sea coastal city in northern Turkey on May 19th, 1919, in preparation for the great struggle which resulted in the creation of Modern Turkey out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire
