11 protestors arrested during a peaceful demonstration in northern part of Cyprus, Today, on Wednesday, 18 May 2011, the former Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY) employees and a group of supporters from various trade unions and political parties have organised a demonstration to demand the social rights of former KTHY employees. As is known, KTHY was the sole airline company of the Turkish Cypriot Community with a capacity of around 400 employees and went bankrupt and was closed down by the Turkish Cypriot administration back in November 2010. no wonder the vigil did not work for Brits

The employees were not given any clarifications as they were promised. On top of this, “Prime Minister” Kucuk described the protestors as terrorists which has, in turn, raised the tension. Following the statement, the protestors went on and blocked the main road in a sit down protest. Around 8:00 pm, eleven people were arrested without being given any previous warning, during this passive peaceful demonstration. Four of whom were New Cyprus Party members: Nevzat Hami New Cyprus Party’s (YKP) Member of the Executive Board and General Secretary of YKP Youth, Mehmet Karadag YKP’s Nicosia District Secretary and Party Council Member, Oncel Polili YKP’s Nicosia District member and lawyer of the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation and Salih Batak Yenicag Newspaper’s Coordinator which belongs to YKP. The eleven protestors were dragged to the police van during which they have suffered minor injuries. Since then all of them are being kept in Nicosia Police Headquarter in a room of 2m X

Only a matter of time. The middle East, North Africa where corrupt, self-serving rulers have got their comeuppance, it'll happen here sooner or later! Richard

The words corrupt and self-serving apply nicely to the Trade Unions here (as well as the politicians involved). KTHY had 4 'planes and 400 employees. How the hell was that ever going to make any sense? And the funny thing is, there is no bunch of Greeks to blame for this fiasco. It's entirely home made.

Talk is cheap people!Any suggestions for these people or the whole of the TCs for that matter as an alternative?? NO! I didn't think so! Then again, where else in the world or medeterrenian you'd have gone and bought a 'villa',few hundred meters for next to nothing?...........had WE(TCs) been recognised! Have the decency at least to not to go into this discussions when you know nothing about Cyprus.Simply because you are not a TC or Cypriot.

Paul; The answer is simple.............there isn't. What fires me up is the fact that, even though I had mentioned this time after time before,'you' still constantly keep going on about TRNC governments incapabilities! There simply is not a solution to this without a solution! Brinsley made a comment of "Only a matter of time. The middle East, North Africa where corrupt, self-serving rulers have got their comeuppance, it'll happen here sooner or later! " I agree, something'll give....sooner rather then later.

@ msg 1, philbailey: (...) no wonder the vigil did not work for Brits (...) ▶ An unfair comment - you can't compare both events. The candle vigil was for TRNC citizens (allowed to orderly demonstrate by law after consultation with the police) and non-citizen expats (Brits AND others, by law not allowed to demonstrate). The first small group had no problems demonstrating in the middle of a roundabout downtown Nicosia. The second small group, while standing on a nearby sidewalk ("supporting" the demonstration), had no problems with the police either. There was no reason at all for Brits AND other expats to stay away - but they did. There are enough reasons to criticise the TRNC, but next time get your facts right, please.

DC some here, in my personal opinion, have no interest at all in presenting facts or giving or gaining any better understanding , just in creating as much fear and negative impressions as possible. Just my personal view.

re 11 ErolZ >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ubgig29l4k<< Had to endure THREE ads before the vid started... :( Watched it all to find ANYTHING to support the UK Police 'state theory'.. Scargill and Mrs T wanted a 'fight' - they got it... This fight was about WHO would shape Britain for decades... Mr Scargill was an unashamed Marxist at a time when the UK was TOTALLY fed up with strikes.. If anyone thought flying pickets were a good / fair thing - which brought down a UK govt in '72 - they got a wake up call in '84.. It kicked off ( 20 mins into the vid) with incidents like 'Peaceful flying pickets' from Yorks overturning the vehicles of a ( disabled ) Notts miner WANTING to work... which led to the Notts miners - who WANTED to ballot - THEIR mines WERE productive - breaking away from the NUM - There wasn't the levels of Police presence that featured later.. and were NEEDED.. ask any family member of someone who CHOSE to continue to work..

@ msg 1, philbailey and my reply in msg 21: Not even an apology to TRNC for your rubbish in msg 1, eh? No, just leave the thread alone and write another ill-informed "comment" or "statement" in another thread. Miserable man.

MM I was not saying that the UK was a police state. Then again nor do I think that the TRNC police removing demonstrators from a public road is evidence of a police state either. I do think there are some interesting parallels between what was going on in the UK with what is going on in the TRNC today. Of course there are many differences as well but for me certainly more parallels than with say 'arab spring' comparisons that some are so quick and keen to make. Strong historic unions used to getting their own way , a state (be it TRNC elected government or Turkey) comitted to regining in such power, against a background of privatisation plans. This is why I posted the link. People forget just how polarised the UK was back then I sometimes feel. Sooner or later a kind of similar process will happen in the TRNC imo. I hope we can get through without such extreme polarisation and clashes between 'police' and 'demonstrators'.

While 'such extreme polarisation' exists between the government and 'Joe Public', we can expect anything, 'erolz'!
