I keep reading posts about snakes around.

Is there a lot about? Is there more this year?

not seen or heard a single one yet. Not seen many lizards either as a matter of fact. (Although Efes my dog does tend to eat them so that's probably why)

There are snakes about, and the numbers are liable to increase as the weather becomes warmer. Keep to the well beaten tracks and don't wander off into the scrub areas.

Do not worry about our charlui snakes in the north. They tend to be danger to themselves rather than you. The number you see getting run over each year is beyond belief. Their hisss is worse than their bite. Just make sure you have a long stick with you and a very strong pair of walking boots. Do not lift or kick any objects and keep to the paths and you will be fine.

I am not aware of any humans dying from their bite, but their fascist cousins in the 60's is another matter. They specialised in shooting innocent people and throwing them in the dry wells.

The dogs that are bitten by snakes...do they actually enter properties looking for canine prey, or do dogs attack them? (If the latter, the dogs get what they deserve)

That's not very nice Riddles.

Dogs don't hunt snakes but they are inquisitive and they cannot read books or notes on this forum, so they don't realise the danger.

Almost walked into a viper yesterday up in Malatya. The 6 dogs with us did not take any notice at all! About

a metre long, did not hiss just let the dogs and humans go by and then slid off. Be careful out there.....

In the old days people used to put bells on the animals which would warn the snake away. Strange how old wisdom simply evaporates away in such a short time.

Berilela. Sorry to hear about your dog. Not nice at all. We've got three adopted mutts and have been lucky so far.

We are also feeding a tagged brown bitch which is looking for a good home if you feel like replacing yours.

Berilela add to msge 11

The tagged bitch is all brown; mid labrador size and very very friendly. Unfortunately I can't take on a fourth dog but am feeding it to build it up. Am in Karsiyaka near Lapta border. 0533 8655882 if you are tempted.

Snakes, after all, are native to the island and dogs aren't.
