Just my ten pennyworth..........

Instead of spending vast amounts of money on speed cameras every 100 yards, why didn't the trnc government spend the money on things the country needs, such as:

Decent postal system

Mains Water for 1,000's of housholds on tankered water

Modernising the electric power station

sorting out the corrupt legal system

helping the 1,000's of britts shafted by the system

simplifying the PTP system

clearing the back log on kocan issuing

Strict regulation of the building / legal system

cleaning up the 1000's of tons of builder's shite dumped everywhere

cleaning the beaches and providing staff to keep them clean

making the place more appealing to tourists - and remembering they have a huge choice

making the residency process a doddle for brits that choose to invest / live here

making it easy for non TC's to work / start a business here

Cutting out red tape generally

improving the roads

Anything else i've missed ?

Long live Gulen Kebab..

NN,

You missed the main point: speed cameras are very good revenue earners. Probably they get 1:100 in return. I was looking for the possibility of a joint venture with them. Then I promise not to challenge their legality

How about making it more difficult for people who live in Thiland to 'snipe' at the TRNC at every possible opportunity.

NN, don't worry your pretty little head with such difficult conundrums... I fear your grasp of basic economics knows no beginning.

A first-year economics student could drive a coach and horses through your logic but then that's never stopped you before.

Actually, I'm one of those who thinks that speed cameras - in lieu of traffic cops actually doing their job - are necessary in North AND South Cyprus. It's mostly "macho, I'm in a hurry and it's my road" style driving IMHO. People are dying needlessly, being injured needlessly. The speed cameras don't bring revenue to the government, according to Dr Mehmet Avci, who I believe should know as he's the main traffic accidents bloke, but go towards other initiatives, including speed cameras, education campaigns and things like the traffic park in Lefkosa.

The sad thing is that drivers belt along a road then stop for the camera, then belt along the road again. What's the rush? I like the idea of the cameras that will clock your average speed over distance - that might get motorists sticking to the laws.

Craig. If the cameras make a small fortune, and they do, the TRNC would not be better off diverting the installation costs on the schemes NN suggests; so it's not really difficult to see that his 'master plan' for investment does not hold water. As it is they need to raise extra cash to cover all the 'crooks' dodging their properly payable dues by way of residency fees etc. Another of NN's bright ideas.

I do not condone speeding but do know that all of us forget sometimes what speed we are travelling at when we are not concentrating. I always use "photo blocker" which helps prevent the camera from taking photos of number plates which in turn saves many from having their licences confiscated ... it works well.

Most reviews say 'Photo Blocker' DOESN'T WORK!

How come yours does, 'walkerscott' - or, are you 'extracting the Michael'?

WS, whether Photo blocker works or not, under UK traffic laws(On which the TRNC is loosely based) any attempt to intentionally render Index plates unreadable to Cameras constitutes an offence, along with excessively dirty index plates, lights etc, Am surprised any number of vehicles aren't tugged here for just such an offence.

And, according to reliable information, never calibrated, either - which is why they had to stop using them in the South, or face heavy fines, until they complied with EU law!

Am I being cynical or does a new camera appear almost every time a supermarket is built. Are the government buying them or is it a bribe to allow a new supermarket to be built?

NN Msg 24.

I think you are abnormally obsessed with where I live... is there something I should know about you?

I bought several new homes in the UK over time and while there were other building works in progress there was plenty of noise and dirt and disturbance...
