I for one will miss their blog , as frequent visitors to TRNC it has become a part of my daily routine to check out what has been happening in and around Girne and also Franks take on the weekly news, it is almost as addictive as this forum, I wish them both well and hope that someone else can take up the mantle and find the time to produce another blog on life in TRNC. Many thanks Frank & Joan ,

At least they issued a warning to others: There is considerable unrest about Central Bank statements concerning loans made to builders on land and property which has been sold to expats and others. We all know that things have slowed down, so builders are struggling to repay loans and the banks have issued a warning that suggests that homeowners could lose their homes if the banks are holding the deeds against these loans. Akan Gurkan, one of the leading solicitors here, says that it would not be easy for home buyers to lose their property and they could take the issue to court. He blamed the banks for allowing mortgages on land that they already knew had been sold on to home buyers.

| What a lovely couple. They have helped us enormously and without their help our apartment wouldnt look like it does. Joan was very very helpful when we bought all our furniture and curtains through them. Just want to say a huge thank you to you both and wish you all the very best in your new destination!!! | Well they seem to have done their homework.... We considered the Dordogne... but decided against it for now... Here suited our needs and those of our children better... I have relatives living there (in the Dordogne) and we love the rural (real) french people... they are different breed than the Parisien poseurs.. (my term) I hope they live long and happy... and let's hope the never need to avail themselves of the medical treatment. |

Groucho, Fair enough. I'll leave it all out apart from this part, which I think anyone who has not done their homework but who still has some savvy should take note of: "We all know that things have slowed down, so builders are struggling to repay loans and the banks have issued a warning that suggests that homeowners could lose their homes if the banks are holding the deeds against these loans." Frank and Joan do know a bit about N Cyprus. If this has been happening - and we know it has - you can be pretty sure it's on a massive scale. With the state of the ecoomy now, I'd say bad things are going to happen to some people sooner or later.

For once I agree with what Ptepkie is saying. It is very true that there are many huge mortgages on land that the builders cant repay. Now I think for the builders to take out mortgages when they have signed contracts of sale to people should be seen as fraud but its not here. The banks are negligent in giving huge mortgages for land they must know have been the subject of sales contracts but its not illegal. There are cases now where banks are going to foreclose on the land and put it up for auction. We are at risk of losing what we've paid for in good faith. Akan Gurkan is a fine one to talk considering he didnt explain all this before we signed our contract!

We are in this position, our complex has been mortgaged by our developer after we have all paid for our properties. It was free from encumbrance when we bought but has been mortgaged without our knowledge and only came to light when we registered. The ironic part of this is the developer owns a newspaper and is running a campaign to name and shame other builders for this practice. I agree the banks should check out if the land has been sold before giving these loans and it should be made illegal. Stephen

Not much consolation for people who now find themselves in this position but at least (hopefully) all new purchasers will have their contracts registered and find this out at a very early stage, before they have parted with most of their money. That is of course unless you listen to those builders who are still telling their clients "there is no need to have your contracts registered"
