Exiles of the Chagos Islands have had the right to return to their homeland overturned by the House of Lords. The government won its appeal against a court decision that had ruled in favour of 2,000 former residents of the British Indian Ocean territory. So economic considerations are substitued for human rights.... come on Pikey

Groucho, unfortunately in this case I think that the economic reasons were secondary to strategic reasons, nevertheless it's a disgraceful ruling.

Well it's like this Pike... The 2,000 odd Chagossians were thrown off the lands and awarded misreable compensation by the UK gov not for any act of violence but merely as an expedient to the setting up of military bases.... They have won a ruling entitling them to return and there is no issue of other displaced persons occupying them land/homes... Diego Garcia excepted. The campaigning journalist John Pilger said the judgment was political and upheld an "immoral and illegal" act. But for some reason the UK goverment maintain the stance that it's not okay for Turkey to have remained here to secure the lives of countless TCs threatened with extermination... It is double standards of the very worst kind.... that is my point. It's UK government who hold the view I have a problem with.... as it is at odds with their stance over Cyprus for which there was far more pressing justification... in my opinion.... You won't see it this way of course....
