We are moving over in January and would like to know any recommended essentials to put in the car.

Do we bring our 37" lcd tv(about 3 years old) or sell it before we leave and also thinking of buying a small digital paraffin heater as I know it can get cold in the winter months as it is only the size of a small suitcase and very economical

Anything electronic is more expensive here.So the choice is yours.I'd actualy upgrade it and bring it over.Be sure it at least 'looks' used please.Heater is also essential in winter times.Perhaps you might want to add few electric blankets as well.

Hi sparky71,

Bring the TV.

I would forget the fire, it will only add moisture to your home :-(

Better to burn a log fire, if you can.

Thanks Salahi

As we are likely to rent for the first year or two may not even need a tv but still need to make a decision and maybe make room for something else

Thanks Navek

As we don't have a definite rental yet we don't know what type of heat/fire there will be

Hi sparky71,

I think an open fire's the best/cheapest way to heat the houses over here.

Keeps them dry too

As Navek says; don't bring a paraffin heater. When paraffin burns it produces lots of moisture. something you don't want.

If you can't have a log fire... Air con works well for heating and actually works out cheaper than many electric or gas alternatives with the added bonus of being clean, instant and removing the moisture which tends to make concrete structures feel clammy in Winter. Electricity is relatively expensive but it does not need to be on for long.

Some people walk around in shorts and T shirt complaining about the cold... dress up in warm clothes for winter and most of the time you will be cosy.

I agree dont bring the heater, but I would look to bring a multi regional dvd player instead as some single region players struggle to play the discs available in the TRNC

Glad to hear you will be renting ....Many didn't and now regret it....I would say electric blankets are a must...most houses are not insulated and the cold outside temperatures in winter take no time at all to permeate the walls...

Sell the car in the UK and put the money towards buying one here, the customs duty on vehicles can be steep. The vehicle has to be less than 3 years old if it is a car, although vans can be imported up to seven years old. If you want to send some items out get it boxed and sent like that.

Most items are readily available here now inclding parafin fires, all makes of TV. I wouldn't want the hassle of bringing personal effects, then be at the mercy of the customs as to how much duty you owe. A personal matter but once bitten twice shy springs to mind.

We are just planing ahead and know the pitfalls regarding the car which would be less than three years old at the end of our year in TRNC, but feel if it dosent work out after a year we can just jump in the car and drive home

Hey Pipie, I too love mine. I also leave them down during the summer, spiders have trouble walking through them.

I am also pleased that I brought my microwave combi, hostess trolley (meals on wheels), and best of all, my slow cooker. While I'm lazing around the pool, my lovely gravy dinner is just about ready after I've had my sun downer. Life can't get much better than this.
