Where do you apply for a fishing licence. I have asked local people and know one can give me an answer, but I know foreigners must have a licence.

When this remarkable law was first posted - honestly think it was only made a law to provide a job for some body's 3rd cousin, twice removed anyway - I remember it being said that all Non TRNC citizens had to have a fishing license. There was some long discussion on this board about it, that as normal headed off towards no kocans, football clubs and rip off builders/solicitors/estate agents etc, etc, so I don't think that anything was actually gained from the thread at all.

Asked a local policeman what he knew and he said it was all about stopping Southerners from fishing in the North and to leave it a few months then just carry on - there was only one guy (the 3rd cousin I think) who issued them from some obscure place in Lefcosia and only the Coast Guard were checking on them - so if you could outrun the cutter you were safe!!!!!

Guess by now the 3rd cousin will have retired on his pension so the license office will just be a dusty place with no phone!!!

Last two times that we have spent some leisure time watching the fishermen on Girne seafront, a policeman with a big notebook has walked along checking something with the fisherman. Licence, local,??????

Only TRNC citizens don't need a license, the 'law' was brought in amid accusations that GC's were fishing here and taking the fish back home with them, hence the need for license's,whether the law is being implemented is another matter.

Personally I fish for sport and return everything I catch but saying that I have seen locals taking home their catch in bags and buckets and something does have to be done to conserve stocks.

On a different note my local brickpond in the UK is now devoid of any fish at all,6 years ago it was full of 20lb+ carp,4lb perch and roach but the Polish immigrants have netted and electrocuted it so much there is now nothing left.

Nobody should mind paying for a fishing licence , but it has to be a realistic fee. the request at the moment is rediculously unjust so nobody pays it.. make it sensible and the money will come in and be put hopefully to good use , such as monitoring fish stocks etc.. good news this year off the rocks past Diana beach the urchins have come back ( none for the last few years) . i am summising , fish stocks can never be affected by rod fishing, coast and boats .. its the big foreign commercial boats off the karpaz doing the damage to stocks. and the now banned (well restricted) netting operations off sicily, malta and italy. they use spotter planes and radar to position their huge nets accross the migratory routes of the tuna..

The coast guards were searching the Alagadi beaches just over a week ago. They used a rib boat to get close in to catch the fishermen - it was amazing how so many men can vanish behind rocks so quickly! Once the coast guards moved on, so did the men reappear from behind the rocks and pick up their rods again. Not much of a deterrent then!

Everyone has to have a fishing licence, Turkish Cypriots included and as said by Wormy the police do check as do the coast Guard, we we get spot checked by the coast guard at least once every 2 weeks. Also boats doing fishing trips with costomers need to get a Tourism Fishing licence for the Boat and captian, with this the captain can issue temp fishing licences for the customers.

I will ask my husband where it is you get these licences as he organises this not me, I will get back to you all soon.

TCs don't need a licence, others (including mainlanders) do.

Just to clarify it.

The cost of the fishing licence is 150TL per year starting from the 1s. Jan untill 31st Dec .

If you are fishing from a boat that needs a licence for the boat ,again 150TL per year.

These can be obtained from the Girne office next to the hospital ( in an old wooden hut ) you will need your passport and a photo for the boat licence.
