If they have always been together, and their owner now deceased, it would be kinder if daughter, who clearly has no emotional connection with them (that is NOT a criticism, but the lady is leaving in a few days) paid for them all to be euthanased in light of the huge animal problem that obtains right now. I believe the kindest thing all round.

The cats are going to be fed by a neighbour every day for a week on the advise of KAR, and then gradually the days will be reduced until the cats can fend for themselves! I have e-mailed pictures of them tonight to Pogle and hopefully she will put them on here in the morning. Thanks Mel. Chris

By "fend for themselves" I presume you mean devouring other local wildlife. I think Ms 6 had it right, sad but true.

Msg 12, Don`t you think it is inhumane to leave domesticated cats to suddenly fend for themselves, if it were dogs there would be an almighty outcry, msg 6 seems to be the best solution.

I cannot believe anyone in their right mind - notwithstanding TRNC is sinking under the weight of abandoned, feral animals, would turn six cats (and this from me, who loathes cats - can't stand them; am a dog person) out to fend for themselves, when all six have lived together, been fed watered and housed, and given medical care when necessary. Who knows if they have road sense? it's beyond comprehension! Anyone who has a part in this unconscionable act surely must question what they are doing? I simply don't understand how KAR can be a part of this either......I suggest anyone who condones abandoning them, read this link first......they HAVE to be put down. http://www.purina.co.uk/Home/All+About+Cats/Living+Together+Cat/Get+More+Out+Of+Life+Cat/Do+Cats+Have+Emotions.htm

MsGarnet, I totally agree with you it would be kinder to have the animals put down, but it is not up to me. The lady that died loved those cats more than she did humans at times, and it was her wish that they not be put down if possible and that they would be re-homed. I am only doing this as a favour to her daughter who has had to return to the UK as her employers are not happy that she has stayed in Cyprus this long. Also I hate cats won't go near them so no chance of me taking them to a vet! Chris

nurseawful - Notwithstanding the owner wished her pets to live on - it was a wish made by someone about to leave this mortal coil, and facing her mortality, didn't want her beloved pets to lose their grip on life just yet - but like our children, WE love them unconditionally, but rarely does anyone else - not having built up the emotional attachment that takes....... Therefore, it was for her daughter to decide whether to honour her mother's wish, or face reality, see it for what it was - hopeless in as much as, she (daughter) wasn't going to stay in TRNC, and it's obvious the Island can barely sustain one more animal. I believe the daughter should be contacted, and be reminded of the situation that obtains, and asked for the finance to put the animals to sleep. If she has a moral compass and compassion, she will agree and do what needs to be done. Otherwise she will have it on her conscience that in fact her late mother's animals will most likely end their days in utter misery....

Back to the top in the hope that someone decides to take one or two of these 'lovely' cats. Chris p.s. MsGarnet, I can't disagree with what you say but there are other circumstances that I can't / won't put on here. If you e-mail me off board I will explain.

Think KAR should help after all the owner has given them lots of support and donations, at least they could if necessary take the cats and have them put down.

msg20... If your solution is for KAR to put down 6 presumably "healthy unwanted" animals, then using your logic KAR could reduce it's numbers dramatically......Is that not so ??

martin41, Yes they could reduce their numbers, but my post is merely that when a person who has helped them for a long time and has now died, they could possibly take the animals if possible, rehouse then if not have them put down. KAR do a lot and get a lot of support, surely in the case of someone who has deceased that has contributed in many ways then surely to help sort out any animals left by them would be an easy way to resolve a problem, rather than leave the owners family who live in the uk with a problem that had nothing to do with them.

Does the daughter own the property?? Is it rented?? If it is owned can the daughter rent out the property through an agent with the proviso that the cats are included in the tenancy. I am sure there must be someone out there looking to rent a property who would be willing to do this on the understanding that if they have to leave then the next tenants would carry on the arrangement. It may sound a bit far fetched but something to think about as it would mean the wishes of the deceased lady would be fulfilled and more importantly 6 healthy cats would not need to be put down or left out in the wild to fend for themselves. Most people reading this thread are probably cat lovers but do not want to take the long term responsibility for them so this could be a solution. I also think it is appalling that Nurseawful has been left with the problem and agree with msg.22 that KAR should take some responsibility.

message 23, I haven't really been left with the problem all I did after helping the ladies (young) daughter was offer to put it on here, which I did with Mels (pogle) help. I did phone KAR for her but they are full at the moment with young puppies and could only offer what they thought was the best solution. Anyway these cats still need a home so if anyone can help please do. Thanks. Chris

Years ago, I was PA and Physio for Beryl Reid (Killing of Sister George - et cetera) in Wraysbury (I live in Windsor) when she was virtually bedridden, towards the end of her life. I would key myself into her property in the morning (she lived in Honey Pot Cottage - so named because if was built in the shape of a honeycomb cell) beside the river. Every morning, when I entered, I would find her in bed, with about eight to ten cats around her head and neck and on the bed. I would have to step over cat faeces and dead river voles and general detritus left by her cats - it was unbearable!!!!!!! She knew her end was nigh - and left her entire estate to a young man, struggling actor - who she befriended a few years previous, on the understanding (which he agreed to) that he lived in the cottage after her death, and looked after all the cats, until they passed away. The second he got his hands on everything, he sold the cottage and got rid of all the cats - stupid stupid woman.........
