Evaluating the Cyprus negotiations process during the visit paid to him by members of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce, President Derviş Eroğlu said although they were about to finalize the chapter on economy, the Turkish sides requests regarding the EU chapters and primary law were not received well.‘There are some convergences on internal security thought’ said Eroğlu.Explaining that it was difficult to say that they were close to coming to an agreement on issues such as territory, property administration and power sharing, the President reminded that former president Mehmet Ali Talat had also not achieved any progress on these issues.

Noting that they had extensively discussed the property issue during the talks, the President said they put forward their desire for a compromise with their proposals.

Explaining that chapters on territory and guarantees would be the last issues to be discussed during the talks, President Derviş Eroğlu said ‘we are searching for agreements on simpler issues but it is difficult to say that we have come to a point where an agreement will be reached tomorrow’.

The President also criticized the Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias who has been hurling accusations at Turkey everywhere he goes.

He gave the clear message that “Christofias’s only collocutor is us” adding that ‘we do not want a solution that will be null and void with a referendum we are looking for a permanent solution’.

I am reassured that these reassurances are in place, and delighted that all of their guarantees are guaranteed.
