A leading Turkish scientist has found traces of mercury and other nasty substances in mothers breast milk. Sorry I forgot the region where this has been found, however it is a place in Turkey which has seen significant industrial development over the last few years. The scientist in question has been supposedly threatened with jail by the ruling government for disclosing the facts.

Recently the Turkish tourist board criticised the Turkish government for destroying historical sites in order to build infrastructure. The government is being criticised for its single minded doggedness in pursuing strong economic growth without care for the environment and its people.

The article can be found in yesterdays English Times.

As much as I understand the reasoning behind your post ilc, the title "to imprison" is not quite the same as supposedly threatened.

Pedantic I know but it is like saying Turkey is a terrible country because maybe they might be thinking about possibly doing something that could be a not very nice thing.

Ilovecyprus, I would just like to say from a personal note, thank you so very, very much for accepting the comment as it was meant and not berating me for it, it makes an extremely nice change in my experience.

you are welcome proger. I do my best to accept when I have made a mistake. This isnt always the case mind you

That being said, it is worrying when scientists are threatened for telling the truth.

Msg 1: "Recently the Turkish tourist board criticised the Turkish government for destroying historical sites"

Destroying antiquities in one's own land is bad enough, but doing it in other people's countries is totally unacceptable. But the Turkish army can get away with whatever it wants in north Cyprus. Putting two stupid, oversized flags in an area of outstanding natural beauty and destroying antiquities is primitive, thuggish, colonialist behaviour.

>>Findings on the site would suggest that the inhabitants were engaged in fishing and farming. Radio carbon dating indicate the settlement being in use around 6000BC. Sadly in 2005, the Turkish military decided there was a need for two large flagpoles on the site. To do this, they either covered or destroyed the ancient site (There are no records of what the ratio is). It is believed that there is still much to be rediscovered, but sadly this will not be for some time<<

erm.. sorry for maybe not being on the right level, but..hello???? mercury being fed to a baby via a mother is a bit more of a worry than loosing antique buildings. mercury causes memory loss, headaches etc, and is contained in food cans, dental fillings, vaccinations blah blah.

zoots message 7:

"...two stupid, oversized flags in an area of outststanding natural beauty"

well, in his book "the medium is the message" marshall mcluhan presents

two side-by-side photos of the same lush rolling countryside:

except that one has huge ugly electric pylons marching through it

and the prof. points out, correctly, that the in the photo with the steel pylons

in it, the country view is even more inviting due to the visual contrast

...and it is very true!

certainly there have been, I am told, rumbles and muttering in nicosia about

the new russian-style and somewhat uncypriot-looking orthodox cathedral

though as we all know, albeit in the very broadest of senses,

"he who pays the piper...etc"

was it not ever so

at the risk of being totaly off topic and pedantic to the extreme the Marshall Mcluhan book is called the Medium is the Massage (not message). Most people think otherwise but it is true none the less. I have my copy here in front of me. Incredible book. I reread it periodicaly and am blown away by it every time and come away feeling I only understood about 2% of what he was saying and even that 2% sets my mind buzzing.

Well said horselover, you have hit on the right response to this event. Mercury in the food chain is very bad news. Peoples health and well being is going to be adversly impacted by this.

Scientists should not be threatened with prison by presenting the facts.

andre,

McLuhan was at the heart of my degree studies 20 years ago. Remembering a reference and including a few choice quotes with context in your bibliography gets you through without even having to agree with him. But yeah, he was brainy and no doubt knew what he meant.
