Just out of curiousity on my part, are there any members out there who are familiar with the statement that "Arte et Marte" means "Twist to Open" By the way, I know you do Mark so no need to answer, just wondered if there were any others.

Well that is 2 people who don't understand the statement. In shrimps case, that is the correct translation, by skill and by fighting however the people I would like to communicate with if there are any would understand the referenct to "Twist to Open" in regards to that staement. In Clarissa2 case, no I am not trying to pretend I am anything, I am who I am, I have my limitations and languages is one of them, see the above about trying to communicate with people who would understand the statement. I am now imagining what comment you had lined up next to attack me with should I attempt to use latin but maybe that is just cunical old me I do remember Magnus Pectorus from school, her real name was Mandy something but just calling her big boobs was so common.

Well if I knew it was that easy to get rid of you, I would have done it a long time ago, you see I can be sarcastic aswell but thank you for bringing my post back to the top and giving me the opportunity to do the same. Isn't it amazing how even an inane comment can be useful

people will have different interpretations on it but my understanding of it was that it was a WW11 phrase. the REME where sent out for the recovery and repair of battle damage and unserviceable equipment hence the term twist to open, tongue in cheek response

mrjim, I am afraid there is only one interpretation of the term with regards to the latin statement. You are correct that it is the motto of the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers or for the ex RE members out there "Royal Engineers minus education") however that could be found through google. I am pretty sure that it is not how you did it mrjim because if you had it would probably have mentioned that the REME were formed in 1942 but did not actually take responsibilty for other units vehicles until after WWII. The term twist to open therefore is not about damaged vehicles but it is a very good answer. It is an answer that I would think only ex REME would know which is why I asked, it doesn't look like there are any in the membership at the moment though. If anyone does want to know I will tell you but be warned it is not that impressive at all, just a way to filter out any non remf's like myself

A long time ago now but the phrase twist to open refers to the REME staple belt which was excellent for opening beer bottles. Stlll have mine somewhere, now you have reminded me think I will dig it out and put in the bar! The Corps did see action in WW11, first engagment was El Alamein.

Correct answer. I tried to warn people that it wasn't that impressive The actual way the belt buckle works is to pass the smaller section through the central hole in the larger part and rotate it 90 degrees to seat it, vice versa to remove the belt so new recruits were told that the "Arte et Marte" written around the outer area of the buckle meant "twist to open" http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/remebelt1.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/193/remebelt2.jpg/ a couple of pictures to get the idea. Anyway, I was just curious if there were many ex Reems around but I guess not too many. Less useless info for the future now noted in diary.
