This could never happen in the TRNC, with world-class consumer and trading standards ready to pounce at a moment's notice.

those poor people,Its my understanding that it was all russian who got poisoned, and they were on a boat who werent legally allowed to serve alcohol, and of course they have to investegate where the drinks originally came from, thats standard procedure.

Msg 3

Even as a journalist I'd of thought you'd have the ability to read and understand the word COULD!

Alcoholic drinks which are being blamed for killing three Russian tourists and poisoning dozens of others in Turkey could have been produced or distributed from northern Cyprus.

When was 'could' a word for fact?

About a month ago there was a big bust in Turkey as a ' house to house' removals truck was found to be stuffed to the gunnels with vodka, it was on its way to Antalya, no news about it being fake, but this could also have been part of the same set up. Keep your eyes open and be suspicious, not too many come backs from here

I would like to mention that the danger is much bigger as in the article mention, which says only "Drinking high doses of it can cause dizziness, breathing difficulties and even blindness".

"officially" 0,1 gr per kilo bodyweight is "dangerous", 1 gramm.... and your life is in danger.

So, one bottle of 0,7 liters whiskey and 45% contains approx 315 gramms alkohol, the young russian girls "usually " are around 50- 60 kilos...

So, only 5 gramms, this is a quarter of a drink, and they might be in problems, 4-5 drinks might have killed them.

Trouble is, even consumed during a couple of hours, is does not make a difference as methanol itself is not (that much) toxic. you are drunk, thats it. Its the formic acid which kills after 6-30 hrs.

We got chatting to a lady (British) recently who said she made 'Lemoncello' using the 'Saf Alkohol' available in the supermarkets.... I was alarmed due to it being 96 percent proof and or unknown origin... i.e. I'm not sure what it is distilled from.

What's the betting the stuff sold here as 'Saf Alkohol' is what is usually termed 'rubbing alcohol' and should not used internally or consumed as it is poisonous... I tried to tell this lady she was playing with fire but she was having none of it.... daft bat!

Re : Msg 1,

I see in one of the articles about the incident the company 'Zhasmin' is named as a supplier of large quantities of the alcohol under investigation, which is distributed in popular tourist areas in Turkey and even in Istanbul.

It's not the first time people have lost their lives from drinking home made booze in Turkey..

But this time they are trying to put the blame on TRNC!!

This article was on today's online Hurriyet

Does it not seem funny that no one has fallen fowl to this booze from the country it is meant to have come from - seems like a cover up to me!

I only drink import Vodka anyway - the cheap stuff gives me a headache the next day!

this sort of hokum attracts zoot like flies to xxxx

the truth is...

nobody really knows the truth, and there may

or may not be other agendas at work in turkey

I can confirm pretty severe hangovers drinking

north cyprus brandy in large quantities,

but alternative cheap uk-sourced trnc-bottled

vodka and gin was a big disappointment

...may I recommend the excellent "istanbul gin"

at about eight and a half lire a throw:

all paid-up members of the gin and tonic set

are invited to test and comment:

it's guaranteed to be snake and scorpion-free

I have yet to taste a local "brandy" that didn't taste like it was syphoned from somebody's tank. At 6tl a bottle just what the hell do you expect? It's garbage at best, and probably poisonous. Use some common sense, people.

there are local brandies which style themselves as premium

and may a bit more refined: did anyone try them?

regarding the original thread from the famagusta gazette,

it is not absolutey clear there is substance to this story,

but it is quite true bogus or harmful drinks are manufactured

in many places around the world by criminal gangs

there is however one guaranteed fake in the press report,

the "famagusta" gazette is really produced in nicosia, roc

The local brandy, also the gin and the Raki are made from chemical produced "essences", industrial made ethanol (sugar and yeast) and water.

in north cyprus it is only mixed and filled in bottles and, it seems, that only the water comes from north cyprus.

To my knowledge North cyprus does not produce alkohol, neither ethanol nor methanol, exept in "privat zivania production".

So we will what the outcome is and who is guilty

kibs,

er, if it really is true as "described" kibsolar,

bit like the russians' cucumber ban I'd guess

perhaps trnc factories benefit from the eu wine lake

...that has been used at times to produce alchohol

I have been suspicious for a long while

that north cyprus brandy is a blended product

and probably from only one original source

but if essences are used, well some of

sainsbury's whisky, and various cheap spirits, as

well as many food products have caramel added,

and that is a carcinogen we are told

high salt levels, preservatives and pesticide residues

are present in lots of foods as is well-known:

indeed many people still register positive for ddt

traces, a pesticide banned fifty years ago

I tried a lot of cyprus brandy, purely for research

...and haven't gone blind yet but I am short-sighted
