This is a bone of contention with my wife but I would like to find the answer...

I was born 18th August 1940 & never receieved call up papers to attend for a medical ... A pal at the time was born 14th February 1939 & was called up in 1960 after finishing his apprenticeship... Does anyone know the cut off date of who got call up papers & who didn't ... People were still going in to do National Service in 1961 , these were people born before August 1940 & had been deferred...

Who has the distinction of being the youngest to be called up & the oldest not to receive call up papers

Thanks lovingcyprus

But to quote extract ...."The last intake of National Servicemen took place in 1960 and only the crisis surrounding the erection of the Berlin Wall delayed the end of conscription. The last National Serviceman, Second Lieutenant Richard Vaughan of the Royal Army Pay Corps, was demobbed on 16 May 1963."

This still doesn't answer what I would like to know as Second Lieutenant Richard Vaughan was obviously deferred & older than me...

Go to Wikipedia-Conscription in UK. Full details of National Service covered.

Doing NS was probably one of my most enjoyable times.

Hi Harita,

My first husband was born in November 1939 and he was in the first batch not to have to do National service. I remember when we were courting he was looking to change jobs but all the interviws ended because they said he would be called up soon but he never was.

Harita,

I've seen it in writing that men born in 1940 and after would not generally be called up.

Thanks Ossie

From Wikipedia

National Service formally ended on 31 December 1960, but those who had deferred service for reasons such as University studies or on compassionate or hardship grounds, still had to complete their National Service after this date. It had also previously been decided that only those born up to 1 September 1939 were to be called up.

1st September 1939 is the date I have been looking for which bears ot what The Butlers Wife states that her 1st husband was born in November 1939 & missed by 1 month... I missed by 11 months , more than I thought ...
