My name is John Downes, I run a wine importing business. Cape Wines in Catalkoy.

Last year I did a deal with World Food (part of Supreme Supermarket). They would buy my wines and sell them to bars and supermarkets, thereby increasing my turnover. This arrangement worked well for a time. But then this January the payments stopped.

They didn't pay for the wine the bought from me. They owe me about TL 170,000. That's serious money for anybody. Things came to a head this week, they told me to my face that they were not going to pay me another penny, sue them if I dare, and if I made a public fuss about it or started legal proceedings then I would get my legs broken. Nice people hey?

They chose the wrong guy to intimidate like that. I don't walk away as easily as that. Not only am I starting legal proceedings, I am also inviting YOU, the good people on Cyp 44 to boycott Supreme Supermarket until this situation is resolved.

No wonder the majority of TRNC business's deal only on a 'COD' basis. Best of luck with your 'name & shame' campaign and the recovery of monies owed. Scan, copy and post your account records which will give more credibility to your cause.

Thank you Richard.

But as you might expect, the accounting records would take up more space than is allowed for posting on here. But be sure, my expensive and aggressive solicitors are on the case. These so and so's are not going to get away with it!

Me thinks that it's about time we took a stand and show some solidarity to support each other, especially on this one.

Although I am sure I will get shot down for this, and no, I don't know either party in this situation but.....

Is it wise to comment and become involved in anything where you only know one side of the story? As this looks like it will be a legal case and John has publicised his view which was what he wanted to do, maybe everyone else should stay out of this and not react to information from one side?

Isn't this just the point that was being made on Alsancak's thread before it become another slanging match by mmmmmm and washerman?

Just a thought

Simhar, I think that's a perfectly fair observation. You don't know the personalities involved. In the coming few months we will learn whether the TRNC has a functioning civil legal system or not.

Yes we only know one side of the story, but as most of you know I worked with John at Cape Wines for 2 years we are still good friends, during that time John was always fair, straight and honest with all his dealings with me,

good luck with this one John

Mssge 13; No excuse was offered.

I was told, in so many words... "I am not going to pay you one penny more. If you complain or go to law and in particular if you bring it up again on Cyp 44 then I will see to it that you are beaten up, and your business will be destroyed. You will see a nasty side to me that you did not previously suspect".

So, I can't say I haven't been warned. But me, I may be brave or more likely reckless and stupid, but I'm just not going to be treated like that.

Nasty threats from a bully. Best protect yourself by posting his name just incase something should happen to you and then fingers will be pointed in the right direction.

I find it hard to believe that a genuine family run business like Supreme Supermarket would stitch up a supplier in this way. I noticed this morning that South African wines were still on sale there. Surely you are not still supplying them John?

Message 20, any Simonsvlei or Simonay wines on sale at Supreme have not been paid for. It's just as simple as that. And as for Supreme being a genuine "family" business, you are quite right.

Message 19, thank you for your concern, but yes I am still intact and the threatened assault has not taken place.

Message 22, yes I just saw, but interesting that they opened a new thread rather than post on this one.

Back to the top..... There has still been no offer of settlement from Supreme/World Foods and those who are boycotting them (to whom I am most grateful) should continue. Thanks everybody.
