So pointing the finger at Spain proves to be a total misdirection.

Gavin

Though not 100% sure, but if proved correct, the Spanish € debt will be written off by the Germans otherwise, there will be all hell to pay. Thoughts?!

Richard,

It should have been fairly obvious that for Germany to be affected in such a concentration, they needed to look to their own production first... to have blamed Spain in such a Cavalier fashion was reckless.

They might well be asked to pay for their error of judgement although I think the price you hint at a little steep in the grand scheme of all things cucumber related...

Re : Msg 9,

Yes, Navek, rather scary. Recommendation stays not to eat cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuces etc.

Here is another link:

The whole point is that all the case seem to emanate from Germany, which would be a neat trick if the goods were produced in Spain by a company that ships all over Europe... as was claimed.

BBC World News states that of the 50% of the bean shoots so far tested from the suspected German farm are coming up negative. A bail out for that business is looming, let alone Spain!

Gavin

The lab has only tested 50% of the whole lot, re-read my post! Turn on your radio and listen as they articulate the situation far better than I!

E. coli...........Commonly found within the intestines and faeces of Ruminants and Humans...Its more than likely in a contaminated water supply...so could effect any produce............

Errm, according to the news this morning, The UK Gov. are asking the Germans to be so hasty in their thinking in future! Hmm, when have the Germans ever been hasty in assuming things before? ....... let me think now..... wasn't it something to do with Poland?.. ;-)

Anyway, on a more serious note, it seems they will need less effort in pickling any cabbages for a while

Bean sprouts are notorious for going off and giving people food poisoning... they don't have to be off at point of production for this to happen. So them finding no problem at the grower's site is no indication that bean sprouts were not the cause. Only that the grower may not have been the cause.

Any statistician will tell you however that the statistical likelihood that the cause comes from outside side Germany are astronomically low... they just haven't found the cause yet. The speed with which fingers were pointed to a supplier outside Germany was regrettable.

Gavin ,you are right, but food poisoning is not necessarily e-coli,it's more likely to be salmonella.....E-coli is prolific in faecal matter, I really do think they should be looking for faecal contamination of water supplies.......

Or looking for faecal contamination of water used to 'freshen-up' sad-looking bean-sprouts?

German tests link bean sprouts to deadly E. coli

It is believed the bean sprouts were produced in Germany

New data released in Germany strongly suggests that locally produced bean sprouts were, as suspected, the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak.

"It's the bean sprouts," said Reinhard Burger, head of Germany's centre for disease control.

Officials initially blamed the E. coli, which has killed 29 people, on imported cucumbers, then bean sprouts.

What a lot of waste of good healthy food! Should be some regulation to stop announcements

like this before the source is found. (Money too of course)

Phyllis

I'm sure they thought they were trying to save lives... but getting it wrong meant they missed the true culprit for a while and potentially more people died as a result; which was the real shame of it all. Surely the statistics for the localised nature of the outbreak should have told them it was their problem? I feel sorry for Spain who have enough problems without this sort of thing.
