This Nigella recipe is perfect and very simple. Personally, I substitute yoghurt for mascarpone and it is much healthier too.

Enjoy.

eat them raw, split in half (make sure nothing moving inside) then just eat the inside, yum.

Dont "chuck them" give them to your TC neighbours. They will eat what they can and share with their family .

"Chuck them", blah blah blah Turtle's actually love them.

Our fig tree went apeshit too... it's only its second year and it's 15 feet high!

The figs were scrumptious...

How do you know when your figs are ripe? ... Easy they've gone. Your neighbour will have picked them....

Groucho, same experience here. Taller and wider than anything else in the garden by a long chalk, in 14 months and loaded with figs in August. I ate most of them myself.

Turbo - exactly right. My first experience of fresh figs was 3 years ago at the Mountainview where a family member of the owners invited me to sit down with him at breakfast time to share some of his figs. He cut each one into quarters and prodded them with the knife also, then showed me some tiny maggoty like creatures in some!

I repeated this procedure on the figs from our garden but didn't find anything. After a few days, I didn't bother looking for them. Oh and another probably well known but not mentioned yet item here is that I was told by the locals that they call it "Turkish Viagra". I'm not answering questions on the merits of that statement!

I trimmed my fig tree back when I got over for a 2 week break and instantly got bollocked by everybody. From my wife right down to the water man enjoyed the figs off the tree and told me I should have left it alone. I don't like figs myself but they seem to enjoy just picking the ripe ones straight from the tree and putting them in that orifice above the chin, why bother doing anything else with them.

Went to my friend's dad's village yesterday for lunch and had purple and green figs (unadulterated), oranges, pomegranates, sharan fruit and fresh dates all from his garden. Absolutely gorgeous. We are so lucky to be able to get all this wonderful fresh fruit here.

Split them open fill with crystalised ginger and bake in oven for 10-15 mins and serve hot with ice-cream: delicious.

Do same and wrap in filo pastry: even better.

How long before they bear fruit?

I went home end of July came back October 8th and had 3 figtrees 3-4 ft high which we hadn't planted.

Birds drop the seeds, the best figs are usually the first ones of the season, they are gigantic, keep your eyes open next year for the first jumbo fig.

The down side is, if not picked and let to over ripen on tree till they start dropping , you will get tons of wasps, tons, and maggots.

HOw about this one. Breakfast Fig Spread.

6 oz dried balck figs - I would say 8 oz fresh would be ok. 1 tsp fresh ginger diced 1 cup orange juice 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice 1/8 tsp table salt. Combine them all in a pan and bring to the boil, rduce the heat to medium low and simmer stiring occasionally - until the liquid has evaporated by 3/4. about 15 mins. Remove from the heat and pulsate in a food processor when cooled. Keep in the fridge. spreading on bread for a figgy spread. Try it with plain yoghurt on top... Yum ho for me. Sue
