Did anyone see the first match in the Rugby League World Cup?

England were given a nasty shock in the first half coming in 16 - 12 down against Papua New Guinea. Finally managed to close the match with a 32 - 22 victory.

As always in these sort of encounters the underdog plays out of their skin and deserved everything they got. Well done PNG and look forward to rest of tournament.

Groucho,

That is a generic "England", "again" and "lucky".

If you are an RL supporter you got to consider that this England squad must have a chance?

CIH,

So its perfectly o.k. to start a thread on rugby league but not one on football.Smacks of double standards to me,

Paul.

Oh come on Newlad... it was pretty good as a pun... I realise that the terminology is real Rugby... and you only have "thug forward" or "thug back" and "fookin' ref" in League... he he

Fair point,

Anyway i thought it was a very good game which was deservedly won by England. Most teams in the competition will have their work cut out against the very powerful "Kumuls" who where lead by the indestructible Stanley Gene.Next week Austrailia that will give us a bearing on how far we have come,

Paul.

Paul,

Yes I did watch the game and an excellent spectacle for the sporting community it was. I agree the best team won but can you see PNG doing an Argentina as in the Union World Cup.

We do get a good selection of Rugby, both codes here and I do watch as much as I can as opposed to the wooses game!!!!!

Just for the record. I actually have no problem with the football threads per se, just occasionally there is a lot of them that we have no idea they are about football. Just having a bit of fun.

One more, good luck Tigers, just hope they can keep going to the 40 point mark that is the usual escape point. I did watch their matches in last seasons play offs!!!!! LOL

Q,

Please read msg 12, 3rd para.

I think the football mad Paul has accepted this as a bit of gentle banter away from the deadly serious stuff of Let's get Pikey.

Q, I would guess from your comment you are not as new to all this as your joining date suggests?????????

Bother!!!!

Forgot this mornings game in RLWC, Tonga beat Ireland 22 - 20 and judging by review it was an excellent game.

Groucho, always thought pike was a bit boney for eating. But then I am not much of a fish eater. Still got to sample the lates "chippie" in Alsancak getting good reports.

Paul,

No, I just enjoy watching sport. Always played football when young. In 6th form RU was the game and I chose the easier option of cross country walking. But as I got older and properly introduced to the rules of both codes of Rugby I just love watching.

I even try to get into the Aussie Rules thing, bit weird but still very physical and exciting to watch.

I even watch the league one RL games when they are shown often more watching in our living room than at the grounds. LOL

My home town football is Darlington, weird watching then in play offs last year, Dubai based TV, watching English 4th division games in Northern Cyprus. What a small world it has become!

They you have it, I have come clean.

A a peace of trivia Papua New Guinue is the only country in the world that has Rugby League as its official national sport and they are very passionate about it. Good to see them doing well.
