Just driving home(UK) listening to BBC Radio 4 and Asil Nadir has been granted Legal Aid. It said he had been using his own funds since arriving here in UK. The rules on Legal Aid changed here either last year or year before but seems not for the so called well off.

Legal aid is normally granted based on percentage repayments after means testing. How are his means to be accurately tested if he has assets in TRNC ? How will access to TRNC assets be gained if there is a default in repayments ?

I'd say he has paid enough money into the British tax system to make him entitled legal aid.

Bearing in mind that he is a British citizen and a British pensioner and not to mention the millions he bunged the conservatives over the years.... Why should'nt he excsersise his rights ?

Omaintenance...They certainly do make better reading and in my opinion they are correct. I don't understand why he had to rent a property in Mayfair when he knew it would be a long time before anything gets going, let alone the actual trial. The stupid part of all this also, as far as Legal Aid is concerned, the Government hinted when changing the rules to Legal Aid it would save them £35 million. It could cost this for the total cost of the trial etc.

Needs to ditch the entourage and get into the real world, it really is a disgrace. I kind of had a slight soft spot for this man, maybe just because he is a TC, but that has rapidly dwindled and think he should have just stayed where he was. If he wins his case what would anyone get from it?

the place in mayfair is possibly his own home or a friends,24k a month rent who knows in the murky world of white collar crime, interesting though.

the conservative party have said they will repay the 400k he donated if he is found guilty.

They will be making sure he is innocent then i think!

If Asil has been granted legal aid then obviously he is entitled to it !! I mean its not like he robbed people from their lives savings and defaulted on building their homes is it !!! Like some British businessmen thugs have done !!

And of course we who have paid into the state coffers for over 44 years i.e. taxes whilst we worked and still pay UK taxes on pensions now we live here, cannot obtain NHS help when we need it. Unless of course we lie through the back our teeth like a great many UK ex-pats do.

There are many noted names, in the corridors of powe,r who know Asil Nadir is innocent. Will they step out of the swamp - probably not.

Asil Nadir has been granted legal aid because he was made bankrupt in the UK in early 90', and as such, is entitled to legal aid. At least he cannot be accused of bribery and corruption, as I don't think legal aid funds stretch to that????

British law makes the assumption that "a man is innocent until proven guilty", how well we know that the the public, act as "judge and jury" before cases even come to court! and to date, no actual charges have been filed.

He maybe living in Mayfair, in self exiled luxury, but let us not forget, that legal aid is not paying for that, it comes out of his own pocket. Money that he has worked hard to earn and ploughed so much back into TRNC..

Let's not believe everything we read in the papers..
