Im moving to kyernia soon,is it legal to border hop south for the day then re enter for another 90 days,i have no problem getting residency but it will be bit stressfull in the first six months when i'm trying to find my feet,i will not be working and i can pay for health care if required,to be honest popping to the south for a day evry three months would be a pleasure so if its legal i will do it that way,the thing i need to know is can i still buy a car and get insurance,i know i can still rent a property long term or buy.

Is this route okay i know its done by a lot or is it a sticky topic.

please let me know.

When you first arrive here, you can do it a few times...'maybe' even up to a year...after that you will either have to get residency or go to Turkey every 3 months...i seriously doubt it will be a problem for the first 2 months, besides when they decide to stop you going to the south, you will get a warning of about a month. I hope this helps.

We arrived in the TRNC in January and bought a car in February. We were told that we had 3 months to apply for our Turkish Cypriot driving licenses, you cannot do this unless you have residency. We applied for our residency

in March, only 2 months after we arrived, we did this because we wanted to do everything correct and not cheat the system. I know some people have been here months or even years and not applied for residency but I am sure one day they will be found out, why take the risk of being deported? This is just my opinion and I am sure many people

will say just go over to the south and get another 90 days.

You can buy, register and insure a car as a non resident and drive with your EU/UK licence, when you get residency however you need to get a TRNC licence also.

stelee77 - most of the things are correct - however beware the 'msg 7 type'. Follow their suggestions, seems easier, but will get you in trouble at some point.

Follow the legal ways as mentioned above and you will have no worries

With regard to crossing the border for your 90 days, I think you need to be aware that people over the age of 60 are - apparently - treated differently. This could well be because, after 60 there is no fine for not having residency. The border people may tell you to get it but that is all. I certainly have friends who cross frequently and have never had , to date, any trouble getting their 90 days but, they are all over the magic 60. It would seem to be younger people that they give lesser periods to on the border. I can only surmise that this is the explanation but, in the cloud cuckoo land of TRNC regulations, it is impossible to really know.

Listen to Negative Nick, I did it for a few years and I didnt get a trnc driving licence, just go south, most of the posters on here are sick of the place and wish they hadn't bothered with residency but they won't tell you that cos they are too cowardly to tell you the truth or are just plain bleedin jealous with their properties wrapped round their backsides and can't sell.

stelee sadly a lot of what NN says is true, the place is a rubbish tip, a lot of corruption though I personally did not experience any from the tc's, I made some very good friends there and will be back to visit from time to time but would not live there again, glad I sold and got out.

My advice to you would be DO NOT BUY....RENT, at least then you can just leave when the romance of the place has left your soul and you are sick of the attitude of posters like Yorg.

Interest rates went down - not so many beers for your buck - sell up and find a happier place to look bigger and better in.

Came here to stay, don't need to or want to sell, will live within the laws of the land that has accepted me.

There you go, not too cowardly to tell you at all - truth is I like it here and for me it beats the hell out of the UK, at least here the government is open faced about being bent - in the UK they still try to hide it because they all believe we are too stupid to notice! Its a great place - just take it as it is and don't try to change it because you think it should be better.

ivebinad - zoots etc, joined as the 'pressure 'was getting put on.

Reads familiar!

BTW - you are NOT guaranteed 90 days - sometimes 30 / 60 /occasionally 90 - then again - people who don't stay here know best!

If you are caught driving a car that is not on a rental plate, with a licence other than a TRNC one, then you will be fined, also they may decide that because your licence is not valid, neither is your insurance, and fine you for that as well. This happened to a neighbour last year! To apply for a TRNC licence you must have either residency or a work permit. Having said that people here are always cheating the system and getting away with it, so if you say that you want to do things right and drive legally then you will have to bite the bullet and apply for residency. Good luck with whatever you decide, and I hope you will be very happy here.

I think you are very sensible. You certainly do need to give it 6 months to see whether you like it or not. Sometimes it is difficult to settle and at least if you rent somewhere and do not bother with residency/driving licences you are free to say that its not for you and go back to where you felt happier.

I love it here, and despite its problems, its a lovely place - its very nice to feel safe and that is certainly a big reason why we stay here. I know its not as nice as it used to be 10 years ago because then you did not even need to lock your doors, but by comparison with the UK its great!

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Mable you cannot do that, once you are in the system you are trapped, the only way your residency would lapse is if you left the TRNC for 6 months or more, if you don't you will be fined ... stupid system run by stupid government officials.

stelee77, now perhaps you will have more of an understanding as to my description of the helpful advice you might receive on here.

I do have a simple question for all the advice givers, how many of you have not got residency, own a car registered and insured in your name, drive on a UK licence and have been to the police station twice to pay speeding fines and ask while you were there if everything is legal. thought so.

Tinkie, I am sure you have absolute faith in your neighbours honesty but perhaps they missed out a small detail in their particular case.

Border crossing, I am not over 60, have been in and out of the North approximately 30 times in the last 2 years and have been given 90 days every single time.

Daisy pointed something out that will help to clarify your choice. If they ever do refuse to up your stamp to 90 days, you will always get a minimum of 7 days (from a source at metahan) so that you can apply for residency although I wouldn't wait till day 89 if I were you.

proger, i work in the office where the neighbour gets his insurance so not only do i have faith in what he says i saw the paper work! Incidently this neighbour does not live here, has a holiday home here and comes for less than 90 days each time, which is why he cant get residency or a trnc licence, not because he was trying to dodge the system.

Tinkie, please take this in the jest that is intended but if we all tell the "this one time, at bandcamp" type stories then nobody will ever know what is helpful and what is useless advice.

I advised the O.P. to do the questions by personal mail because these days it is very rare to get a straight answer on C44, I am not disputing your statement however it contradicts itself in facts, unless of course every non resident in North Cyprus is driving illegaly when not in a rental car, and I all ready know that is not true or I would have been fined at least twice through my own volition at the police station.

So far the only person who has adnitted they are in the actual position the poster is questioning is ivebinad and they are saying the same as I am.

The goal posts do seem to get moved around a lot in NC but if you want to know where they will be, ask the grounds keepers not the players

ultimately i think that its down to who stops you.. there doesnt seem to be any consistency here. my husband got a 300tl fine for a traffic offence and i got a raised eyebrow, dont do it again talking to, for the same offence....my husband is cypriot so its not all about getting at the ex-pats either.

We went over the border with some friends who had been here for about 5 weeks, when we came back they actually wrote 55 days ( the amount of time left on the visa slip). I think crossing the border to keep legal is a very grey area. Best thing to do is go to Turkey for a couple of days, cheap flights make it very accessible and its nice to get away for a few days.

I have lived here for many years and have always had a current work permit or residency, and have always had a TRNC driving licence. Different countries have different rules, so if you want to stay there it is best to just stick to the laws of the land.

Also take everything you read on this forum with a pinch of salt - people can only give advice on their own experiences, everyone's is different, and there are also many posters that just write what they want because as it is controversial or they just want to cause trouble.

You can legally come to the TRNC and stay/drive for 3 months - then you can decide if you like it and want to stay longer.

All just my opinion of course - GOOD LUCK.
