Taxi drivers say illegal cabbies are ruining their business

ILLEGAL cabbies are threatening the livelihood of Larnaca Airport taxi drivers, the latter said yesterday during a 50-man strong demonstration.

The drivers headed from Larnaca to the Communications Ministry in Nicosia, where they achieved a meeting with Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis, via the presidential palace.

Larnaca Taxi Drivers’ spokesman Christakis Nicolaou said the professionals had reached the end of their tether after losing considerable revenue to “pirate cars” and >>Turkish Cypriot drivers, who he said were transporting passengers without a professional license, road tax or insurance.<<

“The problems faced by taxi drivers are many and massive, but the government is doing nothing to resolve them,” Nicolaou said. “Despite our continuous pleas to the Communications Ministry, the Licensing Authority and other departments to come to the airport and see our problems first hand, no one in authority has come.”

Leprechaun

Are you saying Nizrentacar are operating illegally when picking up passengers from Larnaca? If so what about other companies that do transfers, I know for a fact the driver does show his documents at the border and hopefully would include the relevant documentation to do business in the Republic of Cyprus.

Perhaps it may be a minority creating the problem, and fair competition is good, at least the transfer price has been constant. Whilst at Larnaca airport my wife and myself asked the fare to a location 30 minutes away and was told the cost by the taxi controller, went to a car and the driver wanted to add another 10 euro's!!!!!! why??? just greedy, another time was charged for two suitcases, I don't know whats going on.

mess 5 - a TRNC taxi cannot get car insurance in the south for "hire and reward" (ie taxi cover) - yes they can get normal third party insurance over there, but it don't cover them correctly....

So all this "fully legal" claim is hogwash..............

you might as well bung yer neighbour to collect you / drop you off.....

Or maybe little Nige ??

Taxi drivers on alert at Larnaca airport

Taxi drivers at Larnaca airport, aided by government officials, were on the lookout yesterday for any illegal pick-ups after promises from the communications minister that they will put an end to the practice.

About 50 cabbies headed to Nicosia on Tuesday protesting ‘pirate cars’ and Turkish Cypriot drivers who they said were transporting passengers without a professional licence, road tax or insurance and threatening their livelihood.

The taxi drivers held a meeting with Communications Minister, Erato Kozakou Marcoullis, who was keen to show that the ministry was responsive to their woes.

The ministry sent two observers who spent the day at the airport yesterday to check into the taxi drivers’ claims. They found very little untoward by late afternoon yesterday with only three complaints made. One potentially suspicious case involved an em
