The owner of this laptop closed it down and left it on the arm of a chair, left the room and then shortly afterwards heard a loud bang and returned to find the chair on fire and what was left of her machine. One of the lithium-ion batteries had exploded.

Not to question the validity of your advice Rowlo in message 3 but is this manufactures advice? I have been unwittingly using laptops with mains supply and battery attached for some 10 years and this is the first I've heard of it happening.

It is not the manufacturers advice.

My manufacturers advice is if useing the laptop on mains power, disconnect the battery once fully charged,do not use mains power with battery connected for long hours.

Brilliant. I buy a laptop because I am sick of losing everything during the (now rare - ha ha ha) power cuts and now I can't have the battery connected so I still lose everything during a power cut.

Should have bought a UPS instead.
