Is 'mysef' a bloke or a shiela?

For the price of 'bona fide' Turkish lessons, you could go out to the night clubs and learn some basic Russian, too - maybe even score a coupla three 'roots'!

happyitaiano!

It is obvious you are trying to net a girl or a girlfriend using this forum, pretending you want to learn English when you seem perfectly capable of communicating in the language! Try one of those "partner finding" sites, or better still - since you have so much self confidence (as you put it) - go round the bars and disco's tonight and you will find a great variety of English speaking ladies who might be interested in a friend.

But pleaseee,do not insult our intelligence (well, at least mine). Last thing I want on cyprus44 forum is to feel like we are some kinds of "pezevenk"s!

You think English is easy?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in

Eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English

For granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a

Guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your

House can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they

Are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with ‘quick’?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word and that is 'UP.'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wakeUP?

'One fine day, in the middle of the night,

Two dead men got up to fight,

Back to back they faced each other,

Drew their swords and shot each other.

One blind man to see 'fair play',

Two dumb men to shout 'Hurray!'

A paralysed donkey, walking by,

Kicked the blind man in the eye,

And knocked the lot though a six foot wall,

And in a dry ditch drowned them all!'

happyitaliano; AND what do you exactly mean by "just be careful what you say to me..."? Is that a threat, or is it just your poor English? First you tell me which one it is and then I shall tell you what to do. The way I see it, there is nothing wrong with your English - but I hope I am wrong for your sake!

keyholekate; I also thought the past tense of dive is always "dived", until I saw what's written in this post and did a bit of search on it. It is obvious that "dived" is generally accepted as the past tense of "dive" in English, and only in some parts of Canada and USA the word "dove" is more commonly used.

Whilst it is generally held that 'dove' as past tense of 'to dive' is chiefly in US usage, it is not wholly restricted to the US. Many US words and spellings are in fact more consistent with earlier English usage. Take for example the word 'connection', in the US it's 'connexion'. In Shakespeare's time it was 'connexion' in British use as well, it is common English usage which has changed not the US.

Dove is not wrong, it's just that the British have shied away from its use, preferring 'dived' as a past simple tense.

Gavin & BigOz

Many decades ago in my youth I was traveling on a bus in Sussex with a sign 'All Tickets Must Be Shewn' painted on the inside. I thought to myself what a stupid spelling error however, on further investigation I found 'shewn' is correct, archaic for shown. Strange old folk in Sussex!!
