@ msg 1, Roomy: It's a British habit on this board that almost illiterate people ridicule people who try to write/speak a foreign language. So be it. But it is sad when English speaking/writing people make the errors you do in your senseless posts. And it's even more saddening when such people use words in a foreign language - without a clue how to spell such words. "schadenfruede" in your post - it's: Schadenfreude. Now find out whether it's die, der or das Schadenfreude. Happy learning.

Hans, out of curiousity, when will you realise that everyone is not up to your standard. I mean even google translate allows for phonetical spelling now.

proger, it is not about being up to "Han's" standard it is about bothering with the language you are writing in, many posters here (CYP44) cant or are unable to even spell-check, which the board does for you. Obviously people for who English is not their native tongue should be considered and excused, but as Hans says, I cant understand why so many British people are almost illiterate, of course typo's are part of life we will all do them sometimes but some of the other things are pretty hard to explain.

Why should we have do dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator? If you can't spell something in a foreign language then don't do it. Find another way to express what you are trying to say.

@ msg 5, proger: Higher, still, and higher, From the earth thou springest! Like a cloud of fire The blue deep thou wingest! And, singing, still dost soar, and soaring ever singest... Byron, Keats, Shelley, Shakespeare..? Google translations do not dominate my life, Proger. I'm pleased to be able to read poems and literature in one of the most beautiful languages in the world: the English language. And I do not understand why people on C44 do not try to speak/write their native language properly. I call it laziness or even ignorance. I'll never be a native English speaker but I try my very best. Do you?

I am not going to make any sarcastic comments, I really want to but I will just try and answer as honestly as I can. Do I try my very best? No, I am afraid to say that I don't find the literary necessities on this forum to be that high. I do try, but not my very best. I would say however that if I were writing in another language I would try my best because I would not want to be misunderstood or make an error that would be insulting. I always try to remember that the english language was developed as an easy language for several nationalities to be able to learn without over complication, perhaps that is why I find it simpler to just read what is written and forgive the person for not being completely accurate, another of my many flaws in the eyes of others, no doubt. I will ask a question though, for safety reasons they write MT on empty welding gas bottles, why would that be?

DC, you are actually wrong. The English language is constantly evolving. Some people may call it a lowering of standards, but new words are accepted into the OED each year, and some old ones drop out. Also, accepted standards of grammar are changing. Text speak, the internet, chat forums, street talk, call it what you may, but if it is accepted by the "guardians" of the English language, why can't you?

I continue to be amazed at the amount of people who do not know the difference between - there, their and they're and many other basic words in the English language. Facebook in particular is full of British people who have little command of grammar and spelling. It is now possible to pass GCSE English Language without having any idea of how it should be written!!! Sign of the PC times, not to criticize anyone!

Snaefell, the schools, colleges and universities churn kids out without the three Rs these days. I know of an English language graduate with exceptionally poor spelling and grammar. His argument is that when he writes professionally there is a spell and grammar checker on his computer. Otherwise, why is it that important? I know he got a GCSE Grade A star, an A at A-level and a degree in English language. Something must be wrong somewhere.

@ 13, you are absolutely correct again mini Hans, I guess I was torn between phonetic spelling and spelling phonetically but I suppose in any other world pointing it out after I have all ready admitted to not trying my hardest would be redundant er rudendent er redundun oh what the hell, pointless. Anthony, I don't think she follows me around, I think she is a latent tumor on Hans's backside that is trying to draw intelligence from him and gets defensive whenever I try to bring Hans down to mere mortal intellect levels. Like a firewall for my stupidity if you will. Shame she can't find something more useful to do with her vast knowledge of life but I suppose if I can keep her busy it will avoid her bothering someone who might care. Keep having fun mini, my teachers couldn't get the knowledge to stick, maybe you can

Cos I were taught proper. I don't know. I come from a pre-computer, internet and mobile phone age. When television wasn't 24 hours a day and there were only three channels in the UK, so maybe quality was easier to maintain. Those are opinions, rather than facts. There may well have been a dumbing down of the UK education system as there were less real jobs and so people had to stay on at school, go to college or university. I certainly could not have gone to university with the grades I got. Or sixth form.

I'm with you DC. When came here to live years ago, I would see blackboard type signs outside bars and restaurants advertising events in mis-spelt English. I would say to my wife 'why don't these people ask their English friends to check the spelling.....'' She would reply that they probaby had. Sadly she was almost certainly right. As someone almost certainly said ''It's all a question of standards old boy'' - and English language standards in the UK have gone south at a rate of knots. Incredibly one of the few parts of the world where English is spoken and written properly is India. I think we should be ashamed of what uk governments have allowed to happen.

As a (now retired) English teacher I agree with Hans. It is extremely poor what is coming across on email/websites/etc. as English. Having taught overseas for several years, (including Turkey, Cyprus, U.A.E, and Bahrein) I have found far more interest and pride in the language from abroad than at home. Taught original Shakespeare to Arab children and it was amazing to see their interest and understanding of what must have been very hard for them to understand,400 year old English, which our own can barely cope with. On an optimistic note, I am impressed with the way my grandchildren are being taught here locally. My grandaughter's command of English, and old Scots, is fine. They get spelling tests each week, and she always gets top marks. Something must be right, somewhere. Pity it is not more widespread. Yes, Snaefell "There, their, and they're" why can't they get it right? So simple!
