I am new to this site so firstly I want to say hi to everyone. Secondly I very seldom write anything on the internet as I am not a whizz kid on computers. I just feel that sometimes you have to share your thoughts so here goes. I think that the charities here do such a good job ie Cancer Trust, 112, KAR etc. I also feel quite touched when the expat community get together and organise events for someone that is ill and can't quite get enough funds to cover medical expenses. What has made me write this is, after reading in the Cyprus Today that there is a fund raising night for a gardener that needs 14000tl to repair his jeep and to find new premises for his business. I know this gardener from long back and he is certainly not on the borderline of poverty when he can drive around in a £10,000 jeep and employ numerous staff. Sorry if this message offends anyone but I just feel that there must be other people in much worse situations that could use this money.

Without saying too much, I felt exactly the same on reading it. Oh that I could afford a car costing that much money, that he wants just for repair. At the same time, in the paper ,is the terrible plight of the poor elderly, sick man in prison, who has to face another 8 weeks in the height of summer to finish his sentence, despite it being said, it wasn't his fault. There are so many people who REALLY need help on this island.

so well said msg 1, too many are jumping on the 'poor old me' syndrome.. stellasstar1 is right, there are so many more deserving cases, but those don't necessarily get a slot in the local rag .....

Ah, the great British expat community. Fahri goes out of his way to help countless people. He's fallen on bad times and some people wanted to show him they were grateful for all he does - over and above the call of duty. And what many of you would never do for your "neighbour". Well done. I hope you are all satisfied with your generosity of spirit.

Why cannot the people who want to help - just do that - help The other people who don't want to offer any assistance - then don't but why rubbish the attempts to help this man, if you are not putting up then how about shutting up! The thing about philanthropy is that it's very subjective, allow other people to make their own choice.
