Beware times are changing in Northern Cyprus.

Our daughter and friends have been out for a weeks holiday at our Villa, they came back from an evening out to find someone had broken into the Villa and searched through their belongings stolen all their money and a mobile phone, they were kind enough to remove the sim card and leave that on the table.

Police were called and apparently this is not a one off.

Our Villa is in the Ozankoy/ Karakum region .

My advice is get extra security locks fitted to your windows and keep all valuables locked in a safe.

In three years we've had villa its the first time its occured. The Villa has been unlocked most of the time never any problem , However I'm now going to fit the locks for peace of mind. Locks fit on bottom rail and suit most sliding doors.

I am shocked to read on so many sites now about burglaries - thought they were unheard of in the TRNC.

We have 5 sliding doors to our place, and I am going to put in place what we had in Florida, which was simple but effective (I hope....)

Sorry, not good at explaining, but basically halfway down the second door, not the first one that slides, we had a hinge with a steel bar. When the doors are open the bar is locked up,something slimilar to a bike clip holding it in place, when we shut up for the night, the steel bar on the hinge came down and being the same length as the door, effectively stopped the main door from being slid back, even if the lock was broken. Does that make sense the way I've explained? To get in with that in place, you would have to smash the glass, which is not easy and certainly not quiet. I assume the steel bar was fitted halfway up the glass doors as it was more effective that having it along the top or bottom, so the doors could not be taken off their runners.

And if you have got plastic doors fitted (don't think many of us have) then you really need to change them, the central panel can be forced through with very little effort.

Sorry for anyone that has been burgled, read in the paper that 3 men have been arrested for the spate of burlaries - if true, the police seem to do a better job of catching criminals - unlike in the UK

Hi Livethedream,

interesting did the article say whether the men were the ones carrying out the burglaries in the bogas/ iskele area?

Hopefuly the local Police batter the crap out of them. Usually if a spate of this kind happens it is more than likely an individual or a gang of low life's that carry out the break in's, this type of scum would never think of working for a living.

With so many new builds and people not living on a permanet basis in NC, premises are vunerable. We as neighbour could and should look out for each other and with Police stations being some distance away from many of our homes, reporting suspicious people should be a duty for all of us. To many people see things going on and turn away from it. Think how you would feel if your place was robbed and you knew a neighbour ignored it.

I would be interested to know where these "pond life" are from ?

Hi Pilgrim, sorry can't remember but do know that they were ex-pat villas that were targetted.

Tiggy, they were locals.

Tiggy - don't have nightmares ? I will, but not about burglars - about your comments and the misfortune of ever having someone like you as a neighbour. I am responding to your unacceptable suggestion that the police should 'batter the crap out of them' (burglars) to reassure readers of this forum that not all Brits take this depraved view.

Low lifes, pond life, scum? Who exactly?

Tiggy thats a bit strong dont you think ? we have had our villa for past 4yrs and have never heard of any burglaries up until now .As pilgrim suggests we just add a few more security measures.and im sure that most people are public spirited and would report any wrong doing anyway. it sounds as if you are saying that they are not ! i for one feel sad rather than angry that this has happened, crime is everywhere! but to suggest violent behaviour of any sort cannot be condoned. This has happened and if the offenders have been caught then you should be re assured that the policing in nc is so efficient.

Point taken Simbas, sometimes the written word is taken out of context to the spoken word. If it had been in a spoken conversation in a relaxed manner then I doubt an eyelid would have been batted. I have read it over again and should have realised it may have been a little sensitive to some. I did not and do not go out of my way and never will to personally offend anyone on the forum.

Indeed, I do believe that people that carry out these types of crimes are the lowest of the low. Maybew I could have used kinder words and hope they d onot read this forum. I also believe that the Police will deal with the individuals and hopefully deter others from these types of crimes. I work alongside Police in my job at night and their views I can tell you are a lot more contentious than mine.

As for the comments of malteser, I do take slight annoyance too. You are being personal about me and you seem to have been given permission to reassure people! As for having me for a neighbour, you do not know me and I can assure you I am not a skinhead with a pit bull dog and a IQ of 1. I am a caring person who gets on with everyone and knows how to conduct himself, I think I would make an excellent neighbour for you! I also feel you should not be putting yourself forward to be speaking for most Brits as you do not know if I am one or not.

In Britain for a long time now the PC people (no one ever sees them) have made life a misery for people being able to speak out and say what really is going on. Another reason for me wanting to get out of the place and having Cyprus as our home .

Both of you have made your points, if you have any comments on my reply then please make them personally to me and I will be more than happy to discuss. That way we do not have to hang our washing out for all to see.

kindest regards to you both and all other users.
