Which customs duties on imported cars from UK to TRNC? In what facility can obtain precise information about it? If I take the car on the Greek side of Cyprus, how long can I drive here?

Thanks everybody for helping!

Check with customs , they us the glasses UK guide to establish it's value. It must be less than whatever the current regulations are ,I think it's 3 or 4 years. The import duty is very expensive well over 60%.

You can drive a trnc reg car for as long as you want in the south but you must have insurance for the south and to obtain that the car must be taxed, insured and MOTed here.

Good luck

The tax payable is not always as high as people assume. A neighbour of mine recently bought a car in the UK especially to keep here (he's a swallow) and drove it over. He checked with the regulations before doing so and finally decided on a Citroen 1558cc diesel hatch back, less than 5 years old (at first the web site said 3 years old but then it was changed to 5). The offices at Lefkosa were extremely helpful, albeit a bit slow and he's just paid £3K in tax and received an LI number plate. (If he had bought a car over 1600cc, the tax would have been considerably more.)

Its not hazzle really, look at all the cars in nicosia forecourts garages, they are all english plated cars, why do the TCs dealers bring the cars from the UK,cos japan is almost finished and now the goverment here want a radiation certificate if the car is coming from japan, which is expensive and quite difficult to get.

90% of cars for sale in cyprus are imported from the UK,second hand cars i mean

Why should people buy a car here if they don't want to, particularly if they make the journey out here a holiday. Take a couple of months, go through 6 countries or so and have a great time doing so. Can't see anything wrong in that, personally.

Many thanks for everybody! I am going to live here 1 year or more so I have to buy a car. We are thinking about TRNC during last 6 years, I know a lot about the place. My son will come in GA primary school so I am to live here a year min. So I work distantly it is no matter for me where to accomodate. I m going to use Range Rover so the price difference is considerable.

Does anybody know the adress or / also phone number of customs office in Lefkosa?

About South side - I meant if I would buy a car there - could I drive here and how many months?

Regards Jack.

To Poul90 - thank you for real help! I ll try tomorrow.

To negativenick - in my opinion in any country you should keep your eyes open. Especially with estate agents.

In Bulgaria, Spain, Italy we have often the same. About Thailand, I do not want to mention - terrible laws.

We brought our car over from the UK. A lot of hassle to be honest. It's a 1.7 petrol engine and the road tax is £450 a year. A Range Rover for car tax alone would be around £1200 I would think. If you are only staying a year, I'd tax it & MOT in the UK for 12 months before I came out and run it on the UK plates. It must have a current UK tax disc. What ever you don't have an accident. It will be your fault whatever the circumstances and you could end up remanded in custody for many months if someone gets killed.

Hector,

Hi im interested in what you have written about bringing a car on UK plates and, as long as it is taxed, running it in the TRNC for a year, or period it is UK taxed. Is that still possible?. If so how do you get the import stamp for the 12 months or so your UK tax is in force?. I thought you could only get the stamp for 1 month at a time, and were not guaranteed

Another question. When do you have to pay the import tax on imported vehicles?. Do you have to pay immediately on importing, or do you still have that grace of the period of UK tax?.

Thanks for any help here.

If I was only going for a year I would look at long term rental which includes all taxes, servicing, MOT,emission tests and a replacement if it breaks down. Do the sums.No problem man!

Hi Stu

If you want to email me with any queries I will do my best to answer. We recently extended the one month grace period and are still running on UK tax. If you have lost my email address ask H and I will pass it on.

I've just been quoted around £12,000 in import duties on an early 2007 MERCEDES-BENZ C CLASS C180K AVANTGARDE SE 1.8 4-DR SALOON (AUTO), which would have cost me £9,000 from a dealer in the UK.

The other option we asked about was a September 2007 SUBARU FORESTER 2.5 XTEN 5DR ESTATE (AUTO), which was going to cost me £10,900 in the UK, again from a dealer - they want £15,000 in duties for that!

They are out of their minds!!!

Over 25 years old needs a verification from an accepted source, like a car club, as to what it cost new so they can work out the same percentage ( is it 40% ?).

so the classic rule is 25 years? when you say ''accepted source'' who need this? And who is an ''accepted source''?

I guess the local car club?

If you are here for one year, buy a car here and sell it on your departure. far less cost and far less hassle, you can then buy what you want to drive rather than looking at cc's etc. You are after all supposed to be enjoying yourself here.

Msg 28 : Sorry for going a little off-topic but, I thought that the rules on importing a car were that unless you had owned the car from new it had to be aged three years or under for importation purposes (,up to five years old if you were registered as first keeper).

Message 34 - I imported my car at the end of April and it was just coming up to 6 years old. I had owned it from new, May 2005. At the time I imported mine I understood that you could import a car up to 5 years old and you didn't have to be the only keeper now. I would be very interested to learn if this is still the case because we(this time in my partners name as each person can only import one) are thinking of importing another, up to 5 years old, but we haven't bought it yet!

With regards the stamp to import the car, I was given one month and had to go to the offices in Lefkosia to get an extention to run alongside my UK car tax. I asked that the extension be given until 30 April when my tax expired, some 7 months later, and they did!

Msg 31 yes it is 25 years. For up to date info speak to Tamer Konat at the Classic & Mercedes Sports Car Club of NC (sorry don't have contact details to hand) but he has a garage (Tamcar) on the left hand side of the Lefkosa-Girne road heading towards Girne. The Club is responsible for issuing import licences for Classics so he is the person to speak to.

Thank you to the information. Is it no matter for TRNC customs from UK or other countries(Russia, Ukraine) ?
