With the demise of Padasah - I used to love their kleftico - where, in Girne, can I get a really good one? Many restaurants have it on their menu - but where do 44ers recommend?

Pine Bay Club/Hotel, Alsancak, advertise a 20TL Saturday Kleftico. I've yet to try it, but talking to the new owner he serves it up in traditional fashion, mixed chopped salad, yogurt, raw onion, potatoes, but also with rice!!

Also a good one at The Lodge in Çatalköy. We often go there for Sunday lunch - also 20tl per person. A good plate full and they'll give you as much extra lashings of gravy as you want.

Unless they're busy and forget you also get a basket of bread, garlic butter and olives to nibble on while you wait for the kleftico to be served.

I tried 'Fast Food' in Alsancak following a recommendation but I wouldn't go back for the Kleftico which was rather dry, very small in comparison and pretty tasteless. Other things we've had there were ok.

I too would be interested to know if there's anywhere that can top The Lodge - at the same price!!

The Pine Bay kleftico is really really good and excellent value for money. If I wanted kleftico that is where I would go.

Couldn't agree more joandjelly. I've been a few times and taken visitors everyone enjoyed the Kleftiko at the Pine Bay. Good value with a free glass of wine the last time I was there.

Gravy with Kleftico???? How can you get gravy when it cooks slow in a sealed oven for 3 to 4 hours with nothing else but potatoes in the packets (apart from the herbs that is), you get some meat juices and olive oil if you are lucky but "lashings of gravy??? What sort of Kleftico is this?

Best I have found close to Girne is the Buffavento Restaurant by Five Finger Mountain......but, if you are willing to travel, then the very, very best has to be Yorga's Restaurant in the Maronite Village of Korucam. All meat is fresh....they have a butchery in the back and chop the meat up as needed.....best to book though, cos Sundays are packed out, mostly with Greek Cypriots coming to the village .... for Maria's Kleftico........

Be prepared to be stuffed to overflowing....fabulous Mezes....and locally brewed wine......can't wait to go again!

Msg 7

'Gravy' could mean the light meat juices from the pan, not a bisto type one. I hope not!

Erols in Ozankoy does a superb Kleftico but only to order and only on Wednesdays. Hubby won't have it anywhere else now, agree about the one at Fast Food - ours was the same. We still go there though because their other food is fine.

There is a guy in Ozankoy, on the left hand side of the road after you go past the auction place and before you get into the village proper, has a sign up most weekends for Kleftico and salad. Had some packets of Kleftico from him many times and always a good meal at a very low price for this dish. If you happen to spot him then give it a try. Village Kleftico as it used to be.

Hello Bondi.

Archway City is now doing Kleftiko. Archway City has opened now where Padişah used to be!

For the best and biggest pieces of Kleftiko has got to be Cakir butchers, near the mosque, they weigh it at 500 gms with a potato and it costs 15tl as a takeaway and is ready from 13.00 or later if you ask them. He has an oven built into a wheel barrow that sits outside the shop

Have to agree crofter, Andy's lamb shank is very good indeed although maybe not "traditional" kleftico.

Andy, I have made several positive comments on this forum about Restaurants as if I have a complaint I make it at the restaurant as you know. I have never complained about on this forum about any restaurant including yours and I never will.

kleftiko is a bit like olive oil i think.

Every restaurant will tell you they make the best kleftiko, same as every olive oil maker will say his oil is better than the oil maker in the next field.

I think its all down to your own taste and what you might like or what you think is original kleftiko, ive eaten in many restaurants here, and im still asking myself whats so special in kleftiko.

Try them all until you find your favorite.
