It is interesting to see all the different 'user'names on Cyprus 44....but how did you decide what your member's name was going to be?

Pandy,

Mine was bestowed at school as a corruption of my name... Didn't appreciate the name at the time but now I think it's fine.

I chose mine from the name of my horse! Well, was my horse, he passed away about 5 years ago.

Interesting question.

I was a very small child and my grandmother bestowed the name on me...it stuck around for the first ten years of my life and I had forgotten all about it until I had to choose a members name.........

My birthstone. Found this write-up about the Garnet stone.

"One glance at the deep red seeds nestled inside of a pomegranate fruit explains why the word "garnet" comes from the Latin word "granatus," meaning "grain" or "seed." This name was given to the garnet because of its close resemblance to the succulent pomegranate seed. But don't bite into a garnet, because at Moh's hardness 6.5 to 7.5, it will definitely damage the teeth!

There are many myths and legends surrounding the garnet. One Biblical legend is that Noah hung this gem on the ark to light his way through the dark and stormy nights of God's wrath."

We pronounce it the Turkish way. We were holidaying in Girne when my wife was pregnant and dining with some Turkish friends. Thought it was such a lovely name. Sounds like eye-sha. Hope that makes sense.

Msg 26. Thanks we do too, although I must admit it causes quite a stir when she goes somewhere new. They never know how to pronounce it and we get some very strange ways of saying it.

Richard,

It's not a corruption of my first name.... My Surname starts 'Crouch' initial G mix it up a bit and it's not too hard to see where Groucho came from... actually, I think it was my geography teacher who first came up with the epithet.

When on duty and introducing myself as "Sheriff" very many people would not accept that there was such a thing as "Sheriff", except perhaps in the USA, even when I showed the formal badge of office and a warrant. I would abandon the pompous approach and lift the lapel of my suit jacket behind which I had a plastic Sheriff's Badge from a cereal packet and say "It is the Deputy Dawg and you can now reply, the hell it is" This would usually break the ice but sometimes it brought a shout of "phone security and get this idiot out of here" If that occurred I would play the theme on my mobile telephone "I shot the Sheriff" and that is when the fights would start ! I always blamed the High Sheriff as he advised me never to show my badge of office as the accompanying photograph was so ugly defendants would have an immediate defence of duress.

Used to do line dancing in the UK . Modern line dancing I hasten add, not country, and that was the name of my favourite dance. I used that for my sign on at LDUK a line dance website , which seemed appropriate.

Plus think it links nicely to my running , which I do even in this heat.

Tried my first name of Steve but this had already been taken. Then tried blackbird (bike I had at the time) but also taken, so went for Suffolk, which is the County that we live in. However as a result we have communicated and met with onother couple who post on Cyprus 44 and who we would probably not have linked up with without this nickname. In actual fact we shall be meeting up with them tomorrow night for a meal.

Some friends on holiday found out that a bungalow was for sale ..

Ticked all the boxes of what we were looking for ..

They named it "Villa Harita" for us after we bought .. HARry rITA from our names ..

Locals must chuckle to themselves as to why it is named a MAP (harita in turkish) ..

Golfing is my passion ,

unfortunately I have struggled with my putting for about 7 years, as I become more and more anxious about missing the putt my muscles seize up and I cannot strike the ball smoothly, sometimes I can't even move at all to make the strike. This Golfing AFFLICTION is known as the YIPS, hence gottheyips.

Actually things are improving so might change it to HADTHEYIPS.

I chose 'dreamydiver' because when I dive I feel free, totally relaxed and at peace..... a sort of dreamy, chilled out state.

My husband thinks my other diving nick name is more appropriate 'Genghis and her Gerkins'. Which I of course, think is most unfair!

I just happen to be a tartar for getting things right when I have my diving instructor hat on and expect my students (who turn out to become excellent divers I might add) to do as I do..so there!

Nice thread...

I wasn't 'allowed' to use MM - to short ! So that's why there's six m's..

MM is derived from MarkyMark.. I was called this BEFORE the rapper DJ Marky/ or the actor Mark Wahlberg were 'thought of' ...... but I 'don't mind' them using it .. I may not have been the first, anyway !

msg. 104. well not so pretentious really. I am the eldest and the only brother. Sometimes it "weighs" quite a bit as I am aware of being looked upon as "my big brother" and "my only son".

After Dexy's Midnight Runners song 'Come on Eileen' (my first name), just change Eileen to Aylin which is how all the locals spell my name.

So not rude as Brinsley has suggested on more than one occasion...

I have not posted here because there is no 'story' to how I chose my unsername here. But in case anyone might think it was because of 'avoidance'. My real name is erol ziya. My username here is erolz. erol on its own might get me confused with other erols. erolziya too long and formal. hence erolz.

@ msg 117, martinD41: (...) as far as I know the Dutch did not Crusade, unless they found the "Holy Grail" and hid it in a Dyke...........oops that sounds a bit rude .. (...)

At the time the inhabitants of the Lowlands were not called "Dutch" (but that is another story) - the Lowlands were part of the Holy Roman Empire (and that is another story also).

Did the inhabitants of the Lowlands participate in one or more Crusades? Yes, they did. Here's just one story, about Haarlem, the town were I spent my last 20 years in the Netherlands (the web page was written with tongue in cheek!):

▶ [ http://www.allcrusades.com/CHRONOLOGICAL/05-FIFTH-CRUSADE/HAARLEM-KRUISTOCHTSTRATEN/haarlem-kruistochtst-txt-1.html ].

So you were wrong again - yesterday was not your finest day on the board (reread the "Fish" thread).
