I do not have a desktop computer in NC and have been considering bringing from UK a laptop with wireless or WI-FI connections.I am advised that a dongle is required!!! Can you computer wizz people tell me if I am doing the right thing, should I obtain a laptop from NC rather than UK? What is a dongle and its use? As I am not really conversant with computers please keep advice in layman terms!!For what its worth I live in Bahceli and can arrange to meet with an advisor! residing in NC. I'm in UK at present returning to NC on the 3rd Nov. so need answers asap. Thanks.

Bring one with you.... the dongle would be for wireless internet via 3G phone system... It seems quite popular as the next big thing here... it's certainly cheap enough to start off with.

Depending on where you are living there may or may not be coverage just like the UK.

The alternative is to have a roof-top wireless link running a cable direct to your laptop... it's obviously not as adaptable as the 3G route which you can use anywhere on the island you have coverage...

Hi Ossie,

read the 3G Broadband Internet in North Cyprus, you'll find it helpful.

What about the provider or is that Turkcell? Reading 3G Broadband Internet its not clear if you can connect up to a laptop. Please advise, thanks

Yes you can connect up the 3G to a laptop. After all that is what is designed for.

Definately bring one with you as expensive here. If you can fit them in the case bring more and sell them!!

Ossie,

If you want one that performs like a demon and is as sexy as a Ferrari... buy a high spec HP (Compaq) Pavilion... They are the business...

If you just want a workaday laptop for emailing buy a cheap as chips one but don't expect it to have ability for high end gaming or much of a resale value...

If you bring a really good one and look after it you'll probably be able to flog it before you leave for just as much as you paid.... if not more...

Not that I advocate smuggling...

Your 'dongle' advisor may be thinking about a computer without built in WiFi (you can get a WiFi dongle)

When I'm in the TRNC I use a smartphone with built in WiFi and unlocked so I can use a Turkish sim. Mine is an O2 XDA Orbit (the original is selling quite cheaply on ebay now) With a WiFi connection - these can be free at some hotels or there are 'hotspots' eg Extend that can be accessed with a pre-payment password (not sure if Bacheli is in one) I can send emails, surf the web and listen to internet radio (not BBC on a mobile unfortunately) A much better surfing/email computer is a mini netbook. They are fantastic to travel with as they are little bigger than a DVD case. I use an ASUS 901 EeePC with built in WiFi that uses a terrific Linux rather than Windows operating system. Other than playing games - this will do everything your larger laptop does - including listening to BBC radio - built in speakers OK, but would suggest you attach some USB speakers. Hope this helps.
