We are proud to inform that with the kind help Turkish Ambassador to Lefkoşa, Ottoman military bands- Mehtar is to lead the Girne Carnival on 17th September 2011. Known by the Persian-derived word mahtar or mehter in Ottoman Turkish, they are thought to be the oldest variety of military marching band in the world. The sound is characterised by an often shrill sound combining horns (boru), bells, the triangle, cymbals (zil) and bass drums, among others. It is still played at state, military and tourist functions in modern Turkey by the Mehter Band and the troops that accompany. The oldest extant marches were written in the sixteenth century. Here are some of the better YouTube videos of the Mehter.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6_LCunr56A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OabC8ddJzOM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lizdpViKTNc (This one means "The Turks are coming"!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51MWamLXEqY Better still come and see them live in our wonderful city.

Capital Radio will also be in the Parade together with the Capital FM Radio Angels. Capital Radio will also be doing a live show from the square and will supply music between stage acts.

The Mehter will certainly get people into the spirit of things as they lead the procession off. The number of floats in the carnival is limited bookings are already being taken, don't miss out! Contac: 0533 847 0275 or info@girnefestival.com
