Hello Sylvie

I always rent from Fontana.

The same lovely gentleman (Savvas, I think) who meets you with the car will arrange to see you again when you return it. It is a stress-free transaction! Nothing to get worried about. And you can pay with your Card when you collect. Already full of fuel, and you return it empty.

Hope this helps.

Hi Sylvie, if we fly into Larnaca we use Economy car rental. They greet you at the airport as you guessed holding a piece of paper with your name on it, you tell them where your staying, not only don't they not mind your staying in the North they normal wish you a pleasant holiday. On your return you leave the car in the car park with the keys behind the petrol flap. One thing I will say is have some euros with you because you will probably have to put some petrol in the car, the nearest petrol station is out of the airport turn right & it's a mile or so on the right hand side. The only other thing is Economy car rental is not the actual rental company they are an umberella company & use local agents.

jo valentine,

thanks i have look to fontana they give good explainations but are more expensive for the same type of coar than economical even with the 20% discount ! but good to know - the only thing bothering me with economical is that they don't come on the return to check the car and fill paper in order to prouve that everything is ok

Dear Sylvie

The reason I went to Fontana the first time was they answered their phone on a Sunday afternoon and took my booking for 0630 Monday morning; I could not have faxed or Emailed anyone and been certain of a car being there the following morning otherwise. And I thought, as a Lady travelling alone, that it is useful to know that you can reach a PERSON out of hours should you have any difficulty. That peace of mind, and the warm welcome I get each time, is worth the small price difference. I am not being paid to say all this!

Cheers

Jo Valentine

Agree, used Fontana in the past lovely greeting and just leave the keys under the drivers side car mat at Larnaca Airport.

jo,

i agree with you in every points, i justwant to prove to my dear husband that we can hire without any problem from larnaca and keep moving in the whole island

which we cannot do from the north to south and i am so sorry for that

i am only stayin g 9 days, my husbandwill stay 2 more weeks and the cost of return taxi makes very little difference for a short stay about 50 euros plus insurance -

It is common practice that you leave the car at the airport without anyone meeting you there. It seems that it is taken on trust that you will leave the car in the same condition you found it. They do not normally give you a full tank of petrol, in fact the car does not normally have much petrol in when you collect it, which is why I gave directions to the closest petrol station. Economy car rentals operate all over Europe, you book through them & they use agents that rent the car to you, the car will not actually belong to economy car rental but a local Larnaca car rental firm.

Had used Economy successfully several times until i had a small prang on the way to the airport, very early in the morning (5 o clock), no third party damage ,two hours before my flight.Left full details in the car of the incident ,tried to ring the agents Reliable car hire on both numbers from the Airport,no answer. Did not have time to report to the police due to flight and being accompanied by my 8 and 11 yr old sons.Emailed Economy and Reliable upon my return to the UK as under Economys terms i was covered for the damage ,even though it was slight.

Then LAKIS car rental took £344 from my credit card to cover the damage and was told that because i did not follow local conditions to the letter that the cover was void. I didnt even rent with Lakis.

BE WARNED DO NOT USE ECONOMY RENT A CAR OR LAKIS OR ANY OF THEIR AGENTS,HAD TO WAIT AT AIRPORT SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE CARS AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO ANSWER MY EMAILS

If when you book you take out "collision damage waiver insurance" then even if you have had a prang the insurance covers it. Also you can pay by cash, so no credit card details.

Re the Wicks,

I had full CDW but due to my failure to find a police station in the middle of nowhere at 5 oclock in the morning 2 hours before my flight with my two young sons to report the accident after putting some scratches on the wing it cost me £344.

Have you tried booking and paying for a car hire in cash without providing a card !!!!!

Bachelibelly,

Thats why I rent from NC car rental companies. I only pay full amount in cash when I pick up the car. Then nobody has copy of my credit card and no risk of more money being taken.

Car can be just left at Ercan car park and you fly home without any worries.

We did pay cash in September & they did not ask for a card. I was surprised I admit. I still think the best advice is fly into Ercan & hire a car from there. When we hired a car from Bird rent a car they meet us at the airport took us to the car & told me I could go to their office the next day to do the paper work & pay then.

I am sure you will find any online booking requires a card of some sort even as a deposit to secure the car hire.Try A ONE Rentacar in the north will pick you up for the cost of the fuel if you hire for 10 days or more and reasonable on cars ,as well.

We alway use SUN RENT A CAR Nicosia. They arrange for a taxi to pick you up from Larnaca which then takes you to Office at Nicosia. Then pick up your hire car from there. If you own a Villa they give a good discount. We have used them a few times with no problems.

Sylvie..I have booked a cat for next June with A-one Rentacar ror 14 days and they do not require acredit card for the booking, youpay however you like when you collect car in the North. They charge £20 each way fromLarnaca. ther are several car hire companies in Kyrenia who operate a similar system. It saves any worries about getting insurance at the border if you hire a car from the South.......

A-one rentacar is brilliant - if Ismail continues to knock the price down every time I make a new booking he'll be paying me to rent his car soon! ha ha. Great service, can't recommend them enough!

Just to reiterrate,

I learnt my lesson the hard way ...

DO NOT USE THE SOUTH CAR HIRE COMPANY ECONOMY CAR RENTALS OR ANY OF THEIR AGENTS IE. LAKIS RENT A CAR ,RELIABLE RENT A CAR,STREETWISE.

THEY CLAIM YOU HAVE FULL CDW COVER ,UNTIL YOU HAVE TO CLAIM ,THEN THEY TAKE THE MONEY FROM YOUR CARD(£344 IN MY CASE) WITHOUT EVEN SPEAKING TO YOU

SHOULD HAVE REALISED..GREEKS ...TROJAN HORSE...HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF

PS

Forgot to add Streetwise took £200 plus from my card by mistake once,Economy looked into it and said it was an error as at the time i had not booked a car, certainly not with Streetwise and my account was credited, but just shows how careless they can be with peoples card details,

Hence,with a bargepole,touching, will not !!!!!!!
