I am terrified of cats and our neighbour has 3 one of which keeps getting through my sitting room window. The windows have bars on the outside but does not deter this cat - is there anything I can put on the window ledges that would deter them. It is so clever it runs all along our walls to he window so my dogs cannot harm it. Cat lovers will think me paranoid but I am terrified. Need help with this.

I am a cat lover and I agree that a water pistol or even a cupful of water carefully aimed will make them leave your premises at 100kph. It does not harm them but they learn very quickly, I think you would o nly have to do it 3 or 4 times and they would get the message.

Cover the windows with mosquito netting, it will allow the air through, but nothing else........

Surprised the dogs barking doesn't stop them visiting, but keeping a loaded water pistol to hand will certainly help.........

Mr Pound does water guns, they look like a bicycle pump and the cats around us are now terrified of the one we have. I only have to pick it up now and they scarper.

Ms Garnet upon my return from the UK early yesterday morning all my fly screen was torn. A beautiful cat had taken up residence on my patio. My 3 dogs came back from their holiday and scared it off but the little sod keeps coming back. Im scared for his safety. He has also left his smell everywhere. First thing I noticed. I though Guido had left damp washing out.I will try some of the trick mentioned. I hate to do so but I cant accept that one of my dogs could attack it . Its a beauty and was well cared for, sadly someone gone back as you can still see the collar imprint.

I am sorry to hear of your fear of cats, but it is a real fear and you are not the only one effected by it, I have two friends in the same position.

I agree with the water pistol theory, it will not hurt them but will deliver a message to the cats.

I think you should take sopme steps to address your issues, this island is full of cats and your life could be pretty miserable if you are constantly on the look out for cats. This is not a frivolous posting, I know my friends have the same problem and it has become a nightmare wondering where we can go for a meal or a drink where there are no cats, please try to address this.

It would be great to be able to buy a cat repellent to rub on your legs! lol

Awful being here if you are truly scared of cats.

Have you ever tried to handle a really tiny kitten? Perhaps it might help you to not be so afraid. I wondered whether you were harmed by a cat when you were a child (we do not always remember though) if so, it would explain your irrational fear of them.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions and also to see that you all took me seriously. Message 15 I know what your friends go through. I do not go to restaurants that have cats, Silver Rocks have a couple and I try to sit on the upper part of the restaurants and the waiters are great at trying to keep them away. I am going to try all the above remedies you have suggested and once again many many thanks. Message 18 the smaller and more playful the cat the more terrified I am. My mother was terrified and probably passed this on to me. As soon as I had my children I made sure they made friends with cats. I am now 71 so I do not think I will get over this, seems the older I get the worse I get.

rocking - never too old to change. You could try Hypnosis, or a course of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I totally loathe cats, for giving me Toxoplasmosis when I was pregnant, to using my garden as a toilet to then go back to their own garden to sunbathe, to being scratchy, dander covered, flea ridden, tom catting, yowling through the night, supercilious horrid things - give me a dog any day!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Before the cat lovers jump out from behind their sofas to sharpen their claws on my belongings - each to their own I say)......

Message 21 - how right you are, I now have to ask when visiting a house whether they have cats or not. How many times have people said 'my cat will not come near you' next thing I know it is walking towards me - so now I stay away. Will start to worry when all my friends start getting cats!!!!!! It was great on this thread that you took me seriously and posted really helpful suggestions - these have all been taken onboard..

Maybe some of the restaurants should issue you with water pistols or employ some one to keep them out hate going to restaurants and finding cats under the table and people feeding them .Which some owners would do more to keep them out. And people should not feed them and i ddo tell them if i see it.

You can buy them on the internet now. Various models.

I bought a version for the garden. Very effective!

No cats in my garden!
