I was just wondering why the Brit's are so superstitious. You must have heard people saying something and then add "Touch wood". You must have seen people veer around a ladder rather than walk below, maybe quite sensible. What of the people who spill salt and throw a pinch over their left shoulder to avoid bad luck. Why is a single magpie a bad omen? Are you on the alert for black cats crossing your path? I just wonder WHY? The ladder is reasonable, if someone is up it they may drop something on your head, the black cat maybe a throw back to witches and witchcraft but why would touching a piece of wood help? Should it be a particular type of wood? I am sitting next to a piece of Japanese Oak, so I'll just touch it before I post - Just in case!!

In England, a black cat crossing in front of you is considered lucky, the opposite of in this part of the world! The one thing that I bought with me from Turkey is never put your handbag directly on the ground, or else all your money will run away! That is why mine is always on a chair! (It seems to be true, by the way)

Friend found out another reason not to put her handbag on the floor! Mouse jumped into it!

I always touch wood, not sure why or when it started, just do it without thinking now!
