none, since you can't stop the birds and wind ,which is what brings the seeds.

Yorgo is right although it will help to put down a weed suppressant in the form of a membrane before covering with shingle then there will be no need for weedkiller

As long as you put the proper membrane down before the chippings you won't get anything growing through. But, as yorgozlu says, neither the membrane nor chippings will stop the weeds. There is so much dust in the air that when it rains a layer gradually forms on top of the membrane so allowing the weeds to get a grip. But they are easier to pull out because they don't get their roots into deep soil.

batterboy58 As you say Membrane"Terran"will suppress weeds quite well but it's main function is to stop the gravel from disappearing/sinking into the ground over time.......

get a bag of lime and spread it ,it'd at least buy you some time before they appear again. And as the years go it gets lesser and lesser if picked by hand.

3 Years ago my garden was full of it,now hardly any.No chemichals.

The worst enemy/weed, apart from Convolvulus, is this pervasive grass that springs up in bright green tufts through the membrane, as well as the coupla inches of shingle on top - this year was particularly bad. I sprayed my TC cobber's property 4 times with 'Touchdown' at a stronger than recommended rate - still this grass persists. Pulling it out doesn't help much cos the root system joins up, so can run underground for several metres and pop up anywhere!

I bought the 'Touchdown', which I was told is the strongest long-term weedkiller currently available in TRNC, at the kiosk shop, just before the Girne general hospital.

I have to say that I have had better results from a residual weedkiller 'Lyphase', which I bought in 'Homebase' Nicosia [RoC].

Previously I have used Round-Up on this pervasive grass and it kills it stone dead - it kills everything stone dead. But this year I cannot find it anywhere and I too have just bought Touchdown - but I haven't tried it yet.

Jovial John, i also use Round-Up and Knockout...both do a great job on this grass, also is pretty good at stopping the Bindweed....

NB...membrane and shingle will not stop the weeds from coming through, you will still need to spray occasionally.

I agree that Roundup [if genuine Monsanto] is the best longterm weedkiller - also, seemingly impossible to find, even in the South now, as Lambrou seem to have cornered the market there.

I'm really wondering what they put in this 'Touchdown' - bloody fertilizer!

You can find Knockout at most garden centres, although due to the immense amount of weeds this year, there was a bit of a shortage and it shouldn't be anymore than 20TL...sometimes a little bit more sometimes a little bit less. You will need one cap per litre.

The Round-Up I have previously bought here was sourced in Turkey and was the original agricultural strength product - 4 caps to 10 litres. Round-Up in the UK is now a joke as it is formulated to EU regulations and therefore doesn't work any more; so I suspect Round-Up from the South will be the same pathetic brew. I imagine that Touchdown also suffers from an EU formulation - although Syngenta are Swiss, their major market is the EU.
