I was absolutely astounded to read online this lunchtime that in the UK as from today you cant keep a vehicle uninsured in a private driveway ect, you must declare SORN, if you dont you will be prosecuted.

I have to laugh at this bit of legislation because if you drive round many of the council estates in England you will see many old bangers ect sitting in driveways and I bet NONE of them are insured.

Message 1, what makes you think its only council estates, its private homes as well that have dumped cars on them. If they have not had the cars SORN that gives the person the opportunity to still ride around in these cars uninsured and that is the reason its been done. Car insurance is high enough and people like this are pushing it higher. Would you like to have an accident with someone who has no car insurance?

Tell me where a scrap yard takes a vehicle for free these days, because they don't where I live, thats why there are cars left on driveways because it costs money now to take away your old car. Only if the car is dumped beside the road will the council take it for free.

I certainly get the feeling that with the economic climate as it is the powers that be are targeting the two plus car families that can't afford to keep all of them on the road anymore.Scrap 'em or face the cosequences

Thats a thing of the past £150 for a scrap car you will get them removed off your drive for £50 any day of the week.Scap people drivein around for any metal.

As usual our government comes up with these 'great ' ideas as said declare SORN and you dont need insurence or tax and you can still take a drive any time you want as long as you dont get caught so no change there.

Yorg

In a lot of cases you are really right but we are not all whingers lol

Dolarkat,

mesage 6 I think you misread or chose to misread message 1 it does not say it was ONLY council estates it just said many of the council estates - which is quite true - and also your last bit is completely wrong as well cos most scrap dealers will take your old car away no problem and most will pay you money as well.

Kittyfun, Scrapdealers where I live do not take your car for free ,they charge. Reason being they have to pay to get rid of the tyres, unless you are going to dismantle the car yourself and sell on bits like headlights etc and just keep the scrap. Most people do not want the bother, hence they pay to have it removed.

Whether its true or not about council estates an even balance should be that its not just council estates where you will see old bangers you also see them on private drives and car parks as well.

They should introduce similar laws here in the TRNC.

there are adverts in our local paper every night by dealers in second hand parts offering up to £300 for your old car and they will come and collect it free of charge. The SORN law has been in operation for some while...

You do not need to scrap your car! All you need to do is a "Statutary off Road Notice" I see nothing wrong with this as it is free and just removes excuses for people not insuring thier cars. I have had a car hit by an uninsured driver it aint funny!!

On another note, the Police in major cities have numberplate recognition... Now that MOT's are electronic the insurance was the last item brought inline. Now the Police can see if a car is Taxed, MOT'd and insured. I drive a company car and the registration must now be logged as a blanket policy is no longer possible. Its about time the uninsured drivers were targeted.......
