Hi all,

Just been going through some monetary figures that Northern Cyprus will receive from Turkey this year, and they equate to the following,

1 billion,124million,156 thousand,318TL.From this amount 635 million,410 thousand,525 TL will be given as a grant. And 498 million,745 thousand,793 TL.Will be given as credit. The question i have is how long will Turkey carry on bailing out Northern Cyprus, before it says enough is enough.Or have they come to realise that they will never recieve one T.L. of this money back,

Paul.

I recently read that the money Turkey sends to the TRNC is equal to the amount the EU gives to Turkey.

If that is the case then the mainland gets off pretty cheaply with regards to the social costs incured by its citizens on the island.

By that I mean education, healthcare, etc, that if they stayed in Turkey would need to be covered by the state.

I have jsut got back from seeing our friend who is a director in a casino. He is distraught the government have put the licence fee up from 1000 euro a day to 3000 euro a day, plus plus plus. They are one of the few that actually get permits not change staff every 90 days, pay electric not like the new ones. Tomorrow or Saturday The Noahs Ark opens in Boyaz. With 3 or 4 more soon. It seems according to him that the want them all in one place, to create Las Vagas type strip. Makes some sense but what about all the workers. He told me also some planned for Karpaz and roads going in place. I dont know if its true but the casino owners have called a meeting next week with the government to help overcome all this. He said a road is now being built from Ercan straight to that area and with the greeks gambling on the border in the new casinos all here will suffer. Please dont shoot me I just saw his dispair x

EU funding to Turkey has been increasing year on year and for 2010 the figure is roughly in the same ball park as that from Turkey to the TRNC I believe. Anyway for info a graph showing the funding from the EU to Turkey from 2004 to 2010 can be found here.

http://www.avrupa.info.tr/AB_Mali_Destegi/Neden_Ab_Mali_Destegi.html

The site also contains alot of info on why there is such funding, what it is for, how it dispearsed and to who and for what.

I worked out - if the actual number of TCs in Cyprus hover around 140-160 thousand, and out of that if 50,000 were employed - assuming the wage earners working for the government were say 30,000, that would leave near enough 3200 euros a month per worker! (approx. 7500 TL per month) The spending power by these people would generate one hell of a private sector and the government would be laughing with revenue from various taxes & bills! Add to that the revenue from exports if "motherland" allowed all our produce to be marketed freely in Turkey, and also add the tourism income - who needs to tax the casinos?

So if it was only the TCs living in their homeland and Turkey was just as generous just for one year - the whole economy would be self perpetuating from then on.
