Just got back from NC today. Have to give a special mention for sunday lunch at Guido's in Alsancak. The food was suberb and excellent value at 22 YTL per head for 3 courses. It did help that we exchanged our money on Thursday and got 2.71YTL/£.

Glad to hear that but not for me ever again

My friend and I went for lunch there today, and we were really disapointed, as we had heard so many good things about the place we thought we would try it

The food was ..... put it this way, we both felt very sick

The service was awful, the so called special bread .... From Atakara

My friend was told as her phone rang that she should turn it off... Not a good move

When we asked for some Tea after the meal... Em sorry no tea

And for the grand total of 60 lira for 2 lunches

Won't be going there again

Scampy did you tell anyone at the time of your feelings regarding this restaurant because you are the first person to say anything negative regarding Guidos and your choice of language regarding the food is disappointing.

I really do think people should talk to the owners of restaurants first before going on public boards.

Give them a chance!!!!

The owners have only just started up, and had a rough ride with their previous place Brasserrie...?

Give them support.... try it and help them dont slag them!

No I am not on commission, just went there a couple of times and always people give somebody a chance and benefit of the doubt!

Complaining about the food/service is not the British way, well not for me anyway. I make my feelings known by not leaving a tip and not going again.

Here we all go again, what one person considers a good restaurant another will not. This thread will probably go on and on and will become more vitrilolic as we go, with no doubt the owners joining in and at the end of the day there will be no conclusion. If you dont like the meal --dont tip--complain--only pay some--or refuse to pay at all.

scampy sorry you were disappointed, i explianed to you the machine had broken down and that we get our supplies of bottled water on fridays. You were not asked to turn the phone down you in fact asked me to turn the music down. I asked you if the meal was fine and you both said you were full and wanted to leave room for your pudding. If that was the case why you couldnt tell us. You even left a tip. The breakdown was 32ytl for 2 main course and 10ytl each for choc mouse and crepe suzzette plus 3 drinks total 60ytl However thank you for your comments nice to put a face to a name.

susie, the bread was actually from astro as we had had a power cut again and in order to make sure you had some bread balsamic and oil on your table we went out to get it for you. You were there alll of a hour and in that time had your meal and dessert. We dont claim to be a fast foood outlet and we never get asked for tea only italian coffees however you have identified a need for some brits. However most customers are very pleased and we welcome thoose.Pop in for a cup of tea and tell me face to face the problems you encountered as nobody else saw them

Professional response Liz. I have to say having eaten at Guidos a few times, never a bad meal/service/anything.

If there is a problem, I know that Liz or Guido would go out of their way to fix it, but first they must know.

Fixing things retrospectively is ok, but tell them at the time, and it will be sorted there and then and hopefully before disappointment sets in.

Christine (Augusta) don't be put off, if you fancy a great meal, with sea food specials on a Friday, so fresh, the stuff is still moving, then then give Guidos a try, if as Scampy says it is not to your liking, speak up, qualify your criticism, and everyone will benefit from any improvement. Having tried it, if you really find it not to your liking, then and only then decide not to return.

And for the less discerning there is always Pizza King a 5 second walk away.

susie, its lilli again thank you for starting this thread. You yourself know that two things you cannont do here is to ask someone to stop smoking at the table or not to use a phone, not once were you asked not to do either. We like to leave that to the diners good manners. YOU MADE YOUR CHOICE FROM THE MENU AND YOU KNEW WHAT WAS IN IT. aS THE MEALS ARE COOKED FRESH YOU MAY EXPERIENCE SOMe DELAY. so to tell the board you felt sick and not us, you actually wanted to make room for desert. Pop in and I will willing give you your tip back had you brought anything to our attention we could have rectified it at once. However as I said thank you for the comments we will always accept critisim when conscutive but not to make me out a liar. goodluck

Msg 4: "I really do think people should talk to the owners of restaurants first before going on public boards."

Why? Paying customers can only take as they find. Restaurant reviewers don't say when they'll be coming for that very reason. It's how you keep places on their toes. Obviously people should complain there and then for poor service or food and any decent place would either apologise or give a credible explanation.

No axes to grind, pals in the trade or anything like that. Just trying to be impartial and constructive.

Hector: "Complaining about the food/service is not the British way, well not for me anyway. I make my feelings known by not leaving a tip and not going again."]

But that's exactly why certain other nations think the Brits are such a bunch of pushovers and are there to be ripped off, all this "let's not cause a scene" nonsense. By not tackling shoddy service there and then, politely but firmly, you are letting the culprits away with it and allowing them to do the same to the next poor punters to arrive hoping for a good meal and night out. Hector, if yous is the "British way" then I'm glad not to consider myself part of the federal state. I believe in saying what needs to be said and doing what needs to be done for me, my family and friends and hopefully for the good of everyone. You make a few enemies along the way but **** them - you don't need people like that.

Sorry if I have upset you

We did try and give you the benifit of the doubt. we didn't finish the meal as it was very rich even for my friend, we didn't say that at the time as we didn't feel ill until about an hour later and it got worse after that,

I will pop in tomorrow if I get a chance as I don't want any ill feelings between us

Plus we left the tip because it is something we always do, and we knew it was all made fresh

You said "Obviously people should complain there and then for poor service or food and any decent place would either apologise or give a credible explanation."

Pikey this is what I said, people should talk to the owners first, ie if you have had a bad meal or service talk to the owners, which is what Scampy should have done. Instead she has come on this board and slated Guidos and made out that the food she ate made her "feel sick". She has not told anyone what she ate before she went into the restaurant or what she ate the night before, or comes to that, what she had drank that day and the night before.

By the way Pikey, havn't had an e mail from you in the last couple months(wink wink)

dalartokat,

Yeah, I see what you are saying. I was really meaning there's no reason not to go public about a bad experience, but maybe didn't make this clear with the excitement of a Friday and all.

"By the way Pikey, havn't had an e mail from you in the last couple months(wink wink)"

Have to confess I can't place you among my contacts, but see above about Fridays etc. Drop me an email and remind me.

Hi everyone.

Just come home after an evening at Guido`s for Haloween. Not packed out but cosy and a very nice atmosphere again. Maybe some people keeping away because of the adverse comments on here!!!!! Well they missed a very nice evening. Guido even gave us all second helpings if we wanted it. We were discussing it on the way home and both agreed if two people should succeed it should be Liz and Guido. By the way, they will be doing a Christmas Dinner so check it out. Well done both. Missed seeing BJ this evening. Kitty is doing well by the way.

Lilli,

Re Msg: 32

"you will love the new place nowhere near as grand but different,"

Having visited the Bras in the past, I much prefer the informality of the new place, type of place you can just 'pop in' anytime, lunch, dinner, or just a beer and a chat sitting outside or in the comfortable loungers. But probably most importantly a small specialist menu and specials, not 6-8 pages of stuff that clearly goes straight from the freezer to the microwave as in many establishments.

As I said in msg 11, 'a little more discerning'

I think it was just what Alsancak needed.

Hi Lilli, I was disgusted to read the adverse report on here re: Guidos, but you know what they say - all publicity is good publicity, and from ALL of the positive and lovely comments about your restaurant, everyone is sure to know that this "particular diner's" comments are either untrue, have an ulterior motive, attention seeking, or her sickness may have been down to greed for eating too much of your lovely food! If her experience was so bad, why didn't she have a polite word with you at your establishment and give you the opportunity to rectify her complaint? Basically, because there wasn't a genuine complaint! From ALL of the comments I have read the "Guido's experience" is not to be missed in NC for excellent cuisine, ambiance and service. Keep up the brilliant work girl. XX NOTE - For all you potential diners out there, it is only fair to your hosts if you have a problem at any establishment, tell the owner at the time, not try and rubbish them on the BB afterwards

w26kay......I think you have said what a lot of members who have tied the "Guido" experience would say.

First restaurant I have been to where I have eaten the full 3 courses and thought it was totally delicious. Excellent service and for a 1st class restaurant very reasonably priced.

To say the food made the poster "feel very sick" is offensive to the owners especially if a complaint was not made at the time.

Still, with all the positive compliments in regards to Guido's Margaret and Guido will continue to do well.....they deserve it.

Hi Kay how lovely to hear from you. You know my physic power told me the minute they walked in they were going to be trouble, I did all i could to make them feel welcome byt they didnt want it.I dont mind standing back when required but I wont be called a liar or take blame for something I havent done, she wasreally damaging saying they were sick but all the people who have popped into see if i am ok all say the same thing about the lady so all i can do is feel so sorry for her. may even employ her as my pr agent > Kay thank God people love us and know us today we had 3 for sunday lunch 2 power cuts and water went not one word of complaint. I hope she does not experience all these difficulties with her cleaning company/we all try to help each other here and i get asked all the time to recommend a cleaning company or property managment company guess who i wont recommend. How are you. My BJ is fine you would not know him from that scrawny puo with his tummy hanging ou to the celebratiy

Hi Lilli & BJ too. xx

Can see you have been really really busy with all your loyal and lovely clientelle at the "IN Place to be" in NC. Everyone is raving about the place.

Clearly (given your latest posting) the poster did not take up your invitation to pop in for a cuppa?

Good for you, for being professional enough to make the offer to resolve the complaint. One can only wonder why your offer was not taken up eh???

Keep smiling lovely. Take care. xxx

Guido's eh. What a place. Cheap tasty food and good service. Only a small gripe that I hope is rectified before my next visit. Some starters are a bit small and arty farty. Also the vegetable portions are far too small.

Not really. The wife who is on the petite size pointed it out. She had some lettuce and apple starter with pistaccio nuts. It was a joke. 3 leaves sticking out of a couple of slices of apple with 2 pistaccio nuts on the side of the plate.

And I agreed about the small veg portions. Although I'm not really into a lot of veg. Usually have a salad myself.

I think this forum should reflect honest veiws on restaurants.

HI Stewey, thank you for your comments. The Starters are ment to stimulate yours taste buds, not to fill you up that you cannot manage the main course and may be follow by dessert or a plate of cheeses. I have been trained to high standards and the presentation of food for me is very important, you eat with your eyes before you even taste the food. What I am trying to do is introduce good food at a realistic price without ripping people off. I take on board your comment about the vegetable portions but as I said before, it is nice to have space for some dessert or cheese after dinner. We are always more then happy to give extra vegetables upon request, just ask for it. Guido.

went back the other day and was happy to see that the portions have actually increased in size which is a good sign for what could be a very good, respectable and formidable reckoning force on the old resturant front hope to see u guys soon

and keep up the good work.

oh and one more thing dont talk about a silly dog this forum is for the resturant only i really have no simpathy for those scaverging animals.

maybe if u added a bit of that dog meat to the portions they might be sufficient enough for me.

see you soon

Guidos is the ONLY place have been had had good meals on consecutive visits, I do not go every week as I am not a big pasta fan but on the 3 or 4 occasions I have been the food service and general ambiance was second to nne at reasonable prices.

I did visit a certain chinese not to far away on saturday nigt fo crispy duck takeaway.

Was throwing up and tother end all day sunday it was no joke I DO NOT DO VOMITING it is so Gross.

Stewy I think you are just a trouble-maker..... here is what you said yesterday.... 2/11/8 "Guido's eh. What a place. Cheap tasty food and good service. Only a small gripe that I hope is rectified before my next visit. Some starters are a bit small and arty farty. Also the vegetable portions are far too small".

Here is what you said today .....3/11/8........."went back the other day"........

OH and which day would that be? The day in between 2nd and 3rd November????

............................ "and was happy to see that the portions have actually increased in size which is a good sign for what could be a very good, respectable and formidable reckoning force on the old resturant front hope to see u guys soon".

Hmm you are not all that you seem IMHO. Have you been there at all???

and keep up the good work.

Kay, I see that although Stewy posted his message on 2/11/08 he doesn,t actually say when he had visited Guidos so it is feasible that there has in fact been a few days in between visits, that doesn,t make him a troublemaker surely.

I have visited Guidos, it,s a lovely place, nicely decorated, good menu, friendly owners, I shall probably call in there again at some point, but it,s not my favourite place. We each have our own likes and dislikes but sometimes I feel that unless you are in agreement with the majority on the board you will be put down or ridiculed for voicing a different opinion.

Yes the truth is out there, and the last time I expressed an honest opinion regarding another posting by yourself I was ridiculed, that is the point I was making.

Hatkins - the key words are in capitals as follows:-

2/11/8 "Guido's eh. What a place. Cheap tasty food and good service. Only a small gripe that I HOPE IS RECTIFIED BEFORE MY NEXT VISIT" etc

3/11/8 "WENT BACK THE OTHER DAY" etc

IMO it is not "feasible" that there has been a few days between visits. That is not what he/she actually said or indeed meant. Sorry to be so pernikerty, but on Sunday, he/she was hoping things would be rectified prior to the next visit, and low and behold today, he/she had been back before even posting the comments on Sunday. So if he/she had already been back, why feel the need to post the initial negative comments?

As in life, personally do not give "two hoots" as to how the majority view me. Like you, I have an opinion, and you should not be afraid of voicing it, regardless. I stand by my view here, Stewy is either living in the "twilight zone", is a trouble-maker, or is not as he/she seems! Just my view, take it or leave it.

Regards

Mind you, I still have all my hair and teeth and have lots of expensive daughters who tend to attract TC waiters at the harbour...........

Hello forum - we too have just returned from TRNC today. Went to Guidos and had a really delightful meal. Food superb and reasonably priced. Efficient and attentive service. We will definitely make this a regular feature of our trips over. Thanks for a lovely evening, Liz and best of luck to you both.

It is true that service plays a very important role in the running of a restaurant. Personnally, i really agree that restaurant should try it's best to offer customer prompt and convinient service. Customer usually become impatient when they can't get timely service, and they have to cry out loudly or keep waving hands, restaurant calling system can help to solve this problem, it includs buttons that placed on tables, and display sreen carried by waiters, when customers need service he just need to press buttons and then waiters will receive it. You can find the similar products on website such as http://www.finyelectronics.com

In the old days in Cyprus it was customary for people to clap their hands when they wanted attention. My father used to do it but this custom ceased during my time and I never clapped hands.

Hello Lilli and Guido -

We haven't been to your restaurant yet but we will be over from the 15th June and our friends will be coming over on the 26th and we're looking forward to dinner at your place. You may know my fiance (Arthur) from his postings on this site. My daughter, Siobhan, will also be spending time with us (she has Crohn's disease) and can only enjoy a gluten free diet, so really looking forward to lots of fish, salad and of course, wine.

With thanks-

and best wishes -

Jackie
